Think your right Neil, but just expressing an opinion about what others have said and to me the only alternative, but the bowling green is a fitting tribute, especially on a sunny summer afternoon, peace and quiet

Re: Kenneth Hargreaves MBE RIP
Maybe he hadn't thought of anything else..or perhaps further afield.
Yes the naming of the bowling green is a fitting tribute for him in Oswaldtwistle, but he was the MP for Accrington and there should be something there, to memorialise him for his work for the town.
He was a very well respected man...by people of all political shades...because he did what was right for the town...regardless of other considerations.

Surly Ken was the mayor and MP for Hyndburn and therefore naming something in Oswaldtwistle, which IS part of Hyndburn, is fitting. He lived in Oswaldtwistle and went to church in Oswaldtwistle. As Accrington is only one part of Hyndburn why should he have something name after him in Accrington.

Oh are you saying its undeserved? The reason has already been mentioned numerous times on this thread.

No. I’m not saying that he doesn’t deserve it. Far from it.
What I am saying is; why does everything have to be in Accrington.

It don,t the Park green is a great idea, But Ken represented "ALL" Hyndburn not just were he lived, so incorporating Eastgate or somewhere suitable as well would a lovely tribute to a great bloke simple as.

Re: Kenneth Hargreaves MBE RIP
I wasn't saying that everything had to be in Accrington.
The bowling green that is to be named after Ken is in Oswaldtwistle - his local area.
Does that mean that Accrington cannot have something which memorialises what Ken did for the town while he was MP.......and was it Hyndburn then......or was it Accrington??
I'm blowed if I can remember when the name Hyndburn was adopted.
Anyway, it doesn't matter.
To change the name of Eastgate(which is anything but inspiring - I bet it took the developers a whole minute to think that one up) to Kenneth Hargreaves Way, would be a permanent reminder of the work this man did for our area.

Hyndburn 1974 Margaret. Before my time of course. The Eastgate name, I think it was the developers as you say who came up with the name.

Re: Kenneth Hargreaves MBE RIP
As long ago as that eh? Thanks for that information Bernard.
It doesn't change my opinion that something in Accrington should be named after him.
Eastgate would be favourite, but another person who I have been in conversation with suggested that perhaps the area that is to be the new Bus Station might have a square named after him. His name should be remembered. I hope there are members of HBC who are reading this, that perhaps have some clout to facilitate such a proposal. I am sure it would meet with public approval.

Its the highways agency not the Council who have the responsibility for the roads and the naming of, although we would be consulted. New housing developments, the Council are consulted about possible names for any new roads, avenues, whatever. And the Council can put suggestions forward to the developers for names. You might remember a few years ago one of our former Councillors, the late Alan Critchlow had a road named after him in Rishton.

Re: Kenneth Hargreaves MBE RIP
Out of interest I was just looking who was the last M.P. born in the constituency before Ken.
I know his predecessor Arhur Davidson was a scouser, but I was looking where the M.P. before him, Harry Hynd, was born, when I came across this. Which amused me.
The poor locals busy weaving cotton, and here's old Harry topping up his tan.
Thankfully his honourable member is sheathed by a fetching pair of shorts.
'British Members of Parliament, (left to right) Labour MP George Chetwynd, Conservative MP Martin Lindsay, Labour MP George Rogers and Labour MP Harry Hynd stood in front of a sun lamp in the gym in Westminster Hall. Early solarium in Westminster.'
(It didn't say what year it was taken.)

Re: Kenneth Hargreaves MBE RIP
if people are bothered about where a tribute is located why not name a street, close or avenue in each town or village in hyndburn after him as new houses and estates are built?
argueing over his tributes location is pretty petty and surely the important thing here is that a good man and his efforts have been recognised so whats to be gained by nitpicking over the location. His work will be remembered all over hyndburn especially by those who he helped

Re: Kenneth Hargreaves MBE RIP
Where on earth did you get the idea that we were arguing? It was a discussion...an exchange of ideas...no heated words were exchanged, no insults were hurled.
It was all very amicable.......and it was done in the hope that it would give the powers that be some idea of what a well liked man he was.
