Lancashire Day

Better late than never...........Today is 'Lancashire Day'. It was on 27th November 1295 (?) that the first men who were in effect Lancashire's MPs went down to sit in the king's parliament, and so this date was chosen to be the date when Lancastrians rejoice in their priveleged birth and proclaim their allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen, the Duke of Lancaster. Many will be wearing a red rose. I will be so doing in the Peel Park pub tonight, drinking Lancashire-brewed ale and eating Lancashire-made food.

This is the organisation which is behind the day's events throughout and beyiond the county boundaries and which does much to maintain those boundaries. Just for the record, Wigan , Bury, Manchester, Rochdale, Liverpool, Southport and Ulverston are in Lancashire - Take no heed of what local government officials say. There is no county of Greater Manchester , nor Merseyside.

Honest, all Lancashire tonight - after my glass of pastis. I do croque royale anyway - same as a madame but with more ham, cheese (Lancashire from Accrington Market), and sliced tomato.

The document of inquisition into the holdings of Thomas Earl of Lancaster, who was executed for treason against his uncle Edward the 2nd, was signed by the Edward the 2nd on July 30th 1322 at Newcastle on tyne. That is when the whole of Lancashire finally passed to the Crown, and became the Duchy of Lancaster.

I'm down to my last half dozen Lancaster Bomber ... might as well drink it all today Don't think I have any Lancashire food though; looks like it will be venison stew with dumplings. Or maybe I'll slide up to the Rose and Crown and have a feed of Eddie Walker's (he's from Preston) fish and chips. Though I wouldn't mind one of the pies they used to sell at Peel Park ... not the original of course

And I have my Lancashire Rose, with "Gradely" on a banner beneath it, tatooed on my arm.

Made Lancashire Hotpot with breast of lamb last night and wore my flat cap all day (although I forgot it and only had my felt hat for my surgery in the morning).

I try to promote it every year, it's a piece of history we should revel in.

Am aware of Lancashire Day and had tripe (from Lancashire, but bought in my local supermarket here in Cambridgeshire) and chips with lots of salt and vinegar for tea yesterday to celebrate the day.
