I am reliably informed that the current council have had the opportunity to stock up to capacity with grit at any time for very little cost and yet have left stores half full, despite Met office warnings well in advance. The Government had to get involved when it turned into a crisis for many areas who had not made provisions.

Again, the borough councils are spending our money and it should be prioritised for things which are likely to affect all of us, not buildings costing hundreds of thousands of pounds in one ward that will be used by one group of people.

does anyone recall how much of our money was spent on that funfair ride they put on braodway alone to celebrate the mayor or somthing i think it was around 10 grand and to top it off it was £5 a go plus the cost of repairing teh damage it did to the pavement on broadway

why does the council spend so much on clebrating a mayor the only people who give a toss about the mayor is teh mayor himself and his councilor buddies and friends because apart from them there is no benefit what so ever of having a mayor that i can see

that gold chain around the mayors neck should have been put in an envolope and sent to cash for gold ages ago , that coulda bought some gritt if funds were low lol

i complained to the council about the bins. next collection i heared the driver shout to one of the loaders make sure you put the bin back at 26 that you know what moaned about it.
it was the only time the bin was put back.

I had a large wheelie bin, and a small wheelie bin when i arrived here, they were emptied for the first couple of weeks, then the large one disappeared, as it is a cul de sac and always neighbours around, it wasnt taken by a neighbour, so there are two choices, the bin wagon ate it (and I have seen this happen, and they didnt have the decency to let the owner know), or the bin men (the council deny all knowledge), took it because we had two, if this is the case, the fact that there are seven people in the house, and they took the bigger bin, and left the small bin, speaks volumes!

What do you mean my big and small? Is the normal bin everyone has the big one?
I know there used to be bigger than normal bins but the machine did keep damaging them and they broke with the weight that was in them so Hyndburn stopped using them ages ago. Not sure if any are still left, there may be a few.

There are 3 sizes that I am aware of, small one for single people, normal sized one for small to medium family, and large for large family (large being larger than the normal one), I have seen a few around, I wasnt aware that they broke the machinery, cheap machinery? Typical!!

I sometimes wonder whether I should ask for a small one, since mine is rarely half full, but then there are those rare times when it is easier to use the bin than visit the tip when I am having a 'clear out' - put an old rug and Sky box in there this week

It was the bins that were breaking not the machinery.

how big are these big bins i could use one of them i can barely fit my plastic bottles, cans, cardboard and paper plus everything else in teh bin they have given me

Back in the days of coal fires and steel dust bins the bin men had to lift the heavy bing shoulder high and tip it into a lorry, no complaints then, just happy to have a job as the benifit system wasn't as easy to get onto as it is today.
Anyway back to the modern age (?) Our bin men are OK they come through our gate for the wheelie bin and replace it afterwards no complaints, we did have big "A" on the bin because we are OAP's but the bin has been replaced and no "A" is on it. The driver has a print out in his cab and the men know who should have the bins taken out and returned. The "A" system was replaced, so I am told, because some old gent who lived in a council bungalow for the elderly complained that robbers would know an elderly person lived there, in a bungalow for the elderly.

Oh I forgot to mention that my wife always gives the binmen a tenner at Christmas out of her old age pension.

Good question, and the honest answer is that I can't remember the sites that were stated. It was during a conversation with someone that certainly had their facts right, however.

I'll find out and start a thread as it's a subject that affects us all.
