Re: LCC Election results
Bernie, I don't think that is surprising really.......with only two candidates from the main parties and the current expenses fiasco, I think that this is how some folk wanted to show their displeasure at the two main parties.......if an independent had been standing, I think they would have run off with the votes.

Re: LCC Election results
Yep I know what you mean Margaret, seems a pretty abysmal turn out overall really. People are more than a bit disillusioned with the whole subject of expenses and how "no rules were broken", whilst they are struggling in the real world with price rises and such like.

Turn out does look a tad on the low side. You'd think with all the scandal going on, and with people seeming to want to send a message to the central govt. more people would have voted ... or at least get out and do what Granny Claret did .... is there enough of a significant switch to the tories to cause Brown to think about quitting? How are the fringe parties and the independents doing?

Touching 40% turnout for a local election is not too bad. I was expecting it could be a lot lower, especially when you consider all that's been going on recently.

Re: LCC Election results
Just read in the Guardian that the BNP won an LCC seat in Padiham and Burnley West ... any reason for this in that particular area? Or are the BNP picking up votes and seats?

Re: LCC Election results
I agree with Bernard - that the turnout was not too bad.
Labour retained the Great Harwood seat - Ciaran Wells won with a majority of 220.
I had the great honour of being Miles Parkinson's agent in Rishton and Clayton-le-Moors and he had a majority of 70 over Stan Horne.
Graham win in Accrington South was great he had a majority of 479.
Ciaran, Miles and Graham had all worked incredibly hard to win.
Although Labour have suffered heavy losses in other parts of the county - we still have 3 County Councillors in Hyndburn - who I know will work extremely hard for the people of their areas.
Peter won't now be able to blame county council for problems in the borough - I wonder who he will blame?

Re: LCC Election results
I made a comment recently about bnp getting votes of people who didnt know exactly what thier policies are, except that they included controlling immigration, 3 people have admitted to me today that they voted for them, when I told them how extreme bnp are, all 3 had no idea.

That's a little scary ... seems to me, as an outside observer, that one good way to stop folks switching their support to ultra right wing parties would be for Brown to step down and call a general election. But from what I read in the British press and on the CBC website this is not likely to happen; he seems to be digging in his heels right up to his elbows ... there is obviously an unofficial vote of no confidence going on in his own party ... what is it, six cabinet members have already voted with their feet.
