I'm familiar with Benn's sentiments ... but what struck me was that one comment .... I think that he is right ... if I interpret it correctly ... that govt. should represent us .... not control us, or, in the case of many govts., try to "protect us", to usurp our common sense. Some on here have mentioned on occasion the "nanny state" .... and I think I could apply Benn's statement to this type of governing ...

Re: LCC Election results
I know it's a little off topic as it is not really LCC elections, but yesterday (June 9) the voters in Nova Scotia elected their first NDP (Labour) govt. ever ... and the tories ended up in third place after the Liberals. I realize that for most of you, and for most people who don't live in Nova Scotia, that this is not really all that important. But is does seem to indicate that voters over here, unlike their counterparts in Europe are not moving to the right ... strange what's happening over there .... shall have to do some serious reading about the EU and modern British politics.

Re: LCC Election results
The old LCC red rose that looks like the Labour party emblem is to be phased out and replaced with a traditional one.

Re: LCC Election results
bucket loads of our money spent on somones vendetta against the labour party and anything that could be seen as relating to the labour party
thats how it looks to me anyway
how about no flower or any picture i think the wording "lancashire" kinda tells us that its a lancashire van, i for one dont need a picture image to help me figure it out

agree totally Loz, though AndrewB never said if it was a good or bad thing, reckon he's learning how to be a real political animal.

You got me cashman
They said they're phasing it out as to not cost taxpayers money, rather than just swapping. Allegedly!

Just the same excuse as before Andrew .. phasing out ! Could take 4 years, then elections again...
Not a good start for them.

He doesn't seem to have a mind, merely a prejudice. In one of his posts, he suggested that the swing to the far right represents a rejection of Labour ... I just don't see this as possible. When the electorate rejects a social democratic party, it moves to the right, which, in the case of Britain, would be the Conservative Party. They don't flee to the nutbar fringe ...

Some of those voters that will never vote Conservative can and do move to the BNP as they have left wing policies. It's not just me who has this view, it was said by countless people including Labour politicians and BBC presenters.
A poll conducted by YouGov said:
Quote:
59 per cent of BNP voters think that Labour "used to care about the concerns of people like me but doesn’t nowadays".
|
and
Quote:
In the country at large, professional workers outnumber manual workers by 20 per cent to 18 per cent. Among BNP voters the pattern is very different: 36 per cent manual workers, 11 per cent professionals.
|
The working class of course were the people the Labour party claimed to stand up for.
You're not wrong in what you say, people are leaving Labour to support the Conservatives at the next general election. However some of them are going to the BNP too or simply not voting, which has allowed them to get the MEP's.
And Cashman.. I said phased in my first post.
