Leisure Trust funding(for some)
I was interested to read in the Observer that Hyndburn council has agreed to give an extra £85,000 of taxpayers money to fund the borough's leisure trust sites.
These sites include Hyndburn Sports Centre and Mercer Hall in Gt.Harwood, this is to top up the £800,000 the leisure Trust already receives, all well and good we may think?
The ironic thing is another centre:The New Era Youth and Community Centre in Accrington, stands to receive er, nothing.
The centre was opened around 6 years ago and one of the remits was to get youngsters off the streets and into a safe environment were they could engage their energies in sports, music and other constructive pastimes.
The idea being a £1 spent on this setup could save £6 in policing/vandalism costs on the streets.
Now funding is due to be cut, whereas previously little Jimmy and Britnay could be looked after during the hours following school time and their parents arriving home from work, they will once again be out on the streets or home alone.
Up to half a dozen of the staff will lose their jobs whilst others will face pay cuts.
So my question Mr.Britcliffe is this .How come?

Oh great One of the reasons for moving to Accrrington was not only the choice of school but was also told that New Era provided after school hours where my daughter could go. Just about made my weekend complete after Friday night. Perhaps it's time to move back out again

Re: Leisure Trust funding(for some)
I thought trusts were formed so as to enable them to get more funding from elsewhere eg the government and sports bodies. It says on the hyndburn website that the new era is trying to be self funded by bookings etc.
New Era is operated by a community trust and aims to be self-financing through letting facilities to the public and community organizations. We offer generous discounts to charitable groups.
(Hyndburn Council website)
I was trying to find out if it did come under Hyndburn Leisure Trust but it wouldnt let me in to that part of the website.

Re: Leisure Trust funding(for some)
The leisure trust should be actively searching out funding streams to manage its facility - that was the whole point of being a trust from what I understand. So far, I haven't seen much evidence of this. The leisure trust (or the council) needs a funder finder - I've been saying this for a long time - from what I understand they do have someone who can find the funding streams but not someone who is filling in the forms and doing the graft. Please correct me if I'm wrong!
On the other side of this coin - I do think it's right, now that the council is in a slightly healthier situation that they should input some of their cash into the leisure and tourism business.

There's an exception to all rules and in that situation I believe he would be telling the truth

Re: Leisure Trust funding(for some)
Well this topic seems to have wandered off piste,my main concern was the loss of jobs and the loss of affordable child care.Well lets hope there may be light at the end of the tunnel(hopefully not the HBC express.)
