Programmes such as CSI and Lost which are well-made and proved to be a worldwide success are very much in a minority. People may think that they never watch BBC stuff but it has far wider-reaching implications on the output of other channels. At the moment they need to compete with quality TV whereas they would simply spew out populist tripe 24/7 if all they had to do was garner viewers.

I know this isn't the point of the thread but it's a little hobby-horse of mine. The BBC needs to trim the dead wood and fat salaries but it's starting to cut into areas it should be leaving alone instead, such as selling off its book and audio departments to third parties.

Bad move.
There you go,Once more we agree.

I really needed 24 repeats in one night.Still,You pay your money and take

If we are going to get rid of Quangos at least start at the top.

There are repeats on every channel every night but the BBC is funding eight television channels, nine radio channels plus its interactive output, so they can't all be broadcasting fresh material all the time.

We're obviously on different sides of the fence again but the day is likely to come when the licence fee is abolished and TV in Great Britain will change dramatically for the worse.

I think it's

Minutes divide by Quids times by episodes (over a given period) = average % of Licence fee per Weekly viewing = 5.30

Er, am I close ????

I would expect them to pay me to watch that junk TV.

OK - that was a bit drastic - I would accept pay but keep my eyes closed and use the mute button

Re: Licence fee to be cut

There is no doubt in my mind that the BBC is a big jobs for the boys outfit. They may do everything within the rules (where have I heard that before?) Oh yes,but never mind I digress. But they still look after each other at the tax payers expense.

They fund all the pro grammes with license payers money not their own, they have none.

Actually, that's quite wide of the mark.

The BBC have plenty of money coming in from overseas sales of their programmes and it has been exactly the same for around 50 years but although many programmes earn far more than they cost to make (Doctor Who being a prime example), they still don't generate the return needed to be self-funding.

The 'jobs for the boys' days are long gone, whatever you might think. The 1980s saw a boom in that sort of thing under John Birt and that regime was finally ended by Greg Dyke, the best Director General there ever was.

The BBC of today is a comparatively slim machine in terms of fat cat salaries but what they need to get away from is multi-million pound deals for people like Jonathan Ross. There's plenty of talent out there that doesn't need to cost anywhere near that much.
