Little Evidence Of Using Hand Gel
Just spent the last four hours at Royal Blackburn A&E and spotted little evidence of professionals using the hand gel. It infuriates me that a couple of seconds can't be taken to try and alleviate the spread of infections. I always use it when moving from one area to another surely proffessionals should be more fastidious in their care of patients?

Couldn't agree more Bernie, I raised that on here after my last visit, on 11th May, when I subsequently ended up with an infection, which (touch wood) I've just got rid of. During my 2hr in the clinic I didn't see hand gel used once. On the other hand every time my community matron attends my home she never fails to use gel the minute she takes her coat of. I think it was a priority at one time, then people just forget and carry on as before.

Well done for spotting it Bernie, at least you did not spend your time with your head up your backside pretending all is rosy in our hospitals.
Did you notice anything else that was done wrong?
What about neglecting to clean beds before a new patient moves into it?
I bet you Doc wore a wrist watch, many do and you can't wash your hands properly with a wrist watch or long shirt sleeves on.

The last time I was an in patient, the ward was a shambles Neil, but that wasn't the fault of the staff, who were excellent. They actually did wash down the beds between patients and the my consultant (which wasn't my own) who was in charge of me, did actually take his watch off and put it in his shirt pocket and washed his hands after seeing each patient, unfortunately it wasn't the same in the clinic

I am not daft enough to think everything is rosy in our hospitals in fact saw this last year when Mum broke her hip. When they took her down to x-ray noticed blood under where the trolley was sat that wasn't hers indicating the cubicle hadn't been cleaned. She was also had a blood soaked dressing left on her leg for three days. My sister did send a letter of complaint off.
The problems are caused by a number of things IMO, to much money being spent on management instead of bottom line services such as decent cleaners. Nurses coming in from university and not being trained as they used to be in the importance of cleaning thoroughly. We could go on all day about the inadeqacies of how things are being run in the NHS today but surely basic hand washing and using hand gels are things that all workers in our hospitals should have ingrained in them!!!

Both Sainsburys and Tesco are knocking out 2 litre bottles of cider at £1.21 a pop, which works out at about 33p a pint. Given that the alcoholic strength is 4.2%, this should serve as an excellent cheaper substitute for an expensively packaged alcoholic handrub and not only that if you get bored you can always take a few swigs.
