living breathing proof that our justice system doesnt work.
There is a regular shoplifter at the shop where i work, he has over 80previous convictions for shoplifting and other crimes.
Couple of week ago he got sent down for a fortnight for shoplifting whilst i was working, 3 days ago guess whos back.......and shoplifting again.
Why dont we have a 3 strikes and your out system, where if you get sent to prison for a third time thats it.....no chance of release (or ideally execution that way tax-payers money isnt paying for scum like him to be inside).
This really bugs me, i have seen the guy a few times round ossy when i havent been working and everytime i do my blood boils. But im unable to do anything because of the "human rights" brigade. What i wouldnt do for 5mins alone with him .
Just thought id get this off my chest and see what all you lot think? should repeat offenders have a cut off point where we basically say you have had enough chances now your going to the chair . (i know it wont happen but it would be nice ).

Re: living breathing proof that our justice system doesnt work.
C'mon guys, we are talking shopliffting here ... this is not a capital offence ... it's not even something that a lot of us havn't done in our lives ... I remember snagging the odd candy bar when no one was watching ... maybe it pees you off, but it aint major crime.

Re: living breathing proof that our justice system doesnt work.
So what's the difference between shoplifting and burglary and bank robbery Eric?? Theft is theft no matter what guise it goes under. You remember snagging an odd candy bar but you were probably young and wouldn't do anything of the sort now you're an adult. I think speedy is talking about an adult who persistently commits the crime - 80+ times in fact. That is wrong and should be more severely dealt with.

Re: living breathing proof that our justice system doesn't work.
I think the problem here is that there aren't enough prison place to keep these public nuisances behind bars, even if they fine them heavily they either won't pay or commit more offences to pay. This kind of crime is just seen as a nuisance by a lot of people, but not those who are continually targeted by these people, but when some one has committed 80 offences its time to take them off the streets, the bottom line is we need more jails

Re: living breathing proof that our justice system doesnt work.
Build more prisons?
The chances of that happening are nil.
Instead of doing that, they are at the moment reviewing the entire prison system, looking for ways to cut costs. Most of the cuts are being achieved by introducing redundancies.

They have just scraped a proposed prison near Warrington (I think) because of public outcry, they are going to build 5 smaller ones soon, whatever that means

Re: living breathing proof that our justice system doesnt work.
What about fitting them with a tag then installing some sort of machine in shop doorways so that every time the tag wearer tried to get through a shop door it gave them an electric shock.

Re: living breathing proof that our justice system doesnt work.
I can't make up my mind about The Howard League of Penal Reform.
Are they making valid points and arguments or are they a bunch of il-informed do-gooders?
They say that community sentences are more effective than a penal sentences but if an individual chooses to keep breaking the law, what action would change their attitude. The shop lifter mentioned above is not deterred by the present legal system.
Chopping bits off them is not an answer as they would then need looking after. (the people, not the bits)
There seems to be a attitude in today's society that everyone is entitled to a decent living, even if that means taking it off someone else.

Re: living breathing proof that our justice system doesnt work.
I think there's plenty of room in todays prisons. You could easily get 4 in a cell if you take out all the fancy goods. Costs could be cut by feeding them stale bread and water instead of the three squares a day they currently enjoy and further cuts in staffing would also be possible if you kept the blighters locked up 24/7 instead of having people wait on them hand and foot.
Why don't we try it and see how many re-offend or even commit a crime in the first place.
