Re: Local mum needs bone marrow transplant.
I tried to become a blood donor many years ago, but because of my medical condition and the medication I was on stopped me

Re: Local mum needs bone marrow transplant.
It says in the link that if you are between 40 and 49 to contact the NHS regarding giving blood etc so it would seem that you can give blood up to the age of 49 but not sure why youve to go through them. Im sure I have a very common blood group but cannot help by donating blood etc which is annoying as its something I always wanted to do

Re: Local mum needs bone marrow transplant.
Im not allowed to donate blood either emzy ... due to all the medication im on. I went to donate once when i worked down at the bus shed in rawtenstall and they refused me ... My sister had donated twice a year since she started work .. and she received different badges when she hit 50 pints and 100 pints .

Re: Local mum needs bone marrow transplant.
you can give blood long after you are 49, my uncle Bri is 61 and he STILL gives it, he gets a badge every so often for the amount of pints he has given over the years

They raised the age limit too in December Flashy to beyond 70, as per this link, but pretty sure you had to be registered already before age 60 (?) .. can't remember exactly, know when I heard it I wouldn't be able to.
BBC NEWS | Health | Blood donor age limit is scrapped
Started to note a few posters about town re. this lady now... quite a big one at the Dill Hall Lights.

Re: Local mum needs bone marrow transplant.
Well I hope she gets a match, I am already on the register so I must not be a match.
I am a regular Blood Donor, almost up to 25, would have been over that by now but for the fact I get to travel to nice places like the Congo, stops you donating for 6 months.
I hope this appeal encourages more people to give blood, it really is life saving.

Re: Local mum needs bone marrow transplant.
Just a little bump up here.
My daughter works with a 35 year old doctor, whose only option now is a marrow transplant and an extremely urgent situation.
The problem is she is O RH POSITIVE. If someone has this blood group, please consider donating. x

Re: Local mum needs bone marrow transplant.
Yes, sorry .. wasn't quite clear. The most common blood groups are the ones most needed due to the fact most people with these groups will be drawing off the banks. It's for bone marrow transplant, not blood transfusions .. harder to match, but the blood group is the first hurdle.
A suitable match has not been found and the extra problem is that she is of Afro-Caribbean heritage, and seemingly caucasian bone marrow very rarely matches blacks. I think purely due to the fact that ethnic groups are not easily persuaded to donate, and they are likely to have more rare genetic make-ups because their genes are more racially mixed.
Just trying to get people to donate generally is a good starter.

Re: Local mum needs bone marrow transplant.
Kate, you are right...blood grouping is the first step then i Think they do HLA testing to get a match. You are right about the lack of donors from ethnic backgrounds too......though I do not know why they don't come forward to donate.
