Loss of Victoria Hospital stalwart.

I was informed on Tuesday that Isobel Hayes, known to many as Sister Hayes of Male Medical Four ward at Accrington Victoria Hospital,has sadly passed away;

If it had not been for the skill and dedication of Sister Hayes and the staff of Accrington Hospital in 1968 when I was admitted with multipal injuries following a motor cycle accident, I would not be here today.

Many people in Accrington and district owe a debt of gratitude to this remarkable and dedicated Lady.

MAY YOU REST IN PEACE AND THANK YOU

That is sad news.
Rest in Peace Sr. Hayes. You did a great job.

Re: Loss of Victoria Hospital stalwart.

Isobel,(Sister Hayes), must have nursed thousands in her lifetime of caring; how many turned up to pay their last respects ? sadly very few.

You do not need to be a God Botherer in order to acknowledge the good and caring nature in someone but then again maybe I am a little biased.

That thought crossed my mind too.
It is sometimes difficult just to turn up at a funeral, especially if the family don't know you.
I don't like attending funerals full stop.( it brings back some painful memories of people I have lost in my own family....and that really isn't what it is about) I wouldn't go to my own if I didn't have to.

My mother knew Sister Hayes well.My mother was senior staff nurse on casualty at Accy Vic. She is 90 years old now and could not attend the funeral .She says her body is knackered but she still has her marbles.

Like my Ma...she's the same, frail, but sharp as a tack(most of the time, I can't get anything past her).

Re: Loss of Victoria Hospital stalwart.

I would think your mum,Maxthecollie, was working with the wonderful Campie (Campy) when I went to Accy Vic for months in 1954 after falling on Alice Street running for the bus home from Peel Park. All the staff were wonderful with me. I had to go on my own as my parents were working and ofcourse we had no car in those days. I have never forgotten their kindness to me. You and Margaret are very lucky still to have your mums.

Yes Rowlf, you are right. There have been numerous times when I thought her number was up...but she has rallied. I do my best to coddle her along. We visit most days and I take her fresh home cooked grub(made from scratch)... I do what I can to make her life easier.
You only ever get one mum!

Re: Loss of Victoria Hospital stalwart.

How true Margaret. It is 14 yrs since my lovely mum collapsed and died outside Burtons in the Arndale on our way to Specksavers for her eye test. I still do not like walking past there and I miss her every day. I am sure your care is vital to your mum. I hope she has many more happy years with your help.

Me too, I don't relish the day she goes...she talks about it often...it makes me shudder.
It will be 25 years in February since she lost my dad and she still misses him(I do too).

Re: Loss of Victoria Hospital stalwart.

I lost my dad 10 days before Christmas 3 months after my mum. I remember someone saying to me that I was now an orphan and I must admit I felt very alone even though I had my other half and 2 grown up children. As an only one there was no one else that felt like I did and I that seemed weird. I believe the Queen once said ' Tears are the price you pay for love.' How true. I would never say to anyone ' Oh they have had a good innings.' because to the people who loved them age means nothing. The longer you have them the more you miss them. Treasure her while you can Margaret.

You are always too young to lose your parents.
And yes, the good innings comment is insensitive, but sometimes it is said because someone doesn't really know what to say, so I guess it can be forgiven.
