Re: Lost World
I loved the bit with the procession in Manchester. I thought the part with the unmarried girls dressed in veils with lillies in their hands looked so strange. Almost as though they were sacrificial victims. It put me in mind of the Holy Week observances of the Viennese Imperial Court. Apparently, the women of the court attended Mass in dresses and veils so heavy and impenetrable that they found it difficult to turn round. In several biographies it is related that they could only move forwards and hope that there were servants on hand to stop them and help them to manouvre into position in church. How times change.
