Love crimes and punishment.

Apparently we can now do what we like with regards to breaking the law, as long as you can prove you have had your heart broken.

A Manchester librarian stole £175,000 worth of rare books, and sold them on eBay. His punishment being a two year suspended sentence, and 250 hours community service. His defence being that he was depressed after his girlfriend left him. Boo-hoo.

The prisons are over crowded. My answer would be that I don't care, just squash more of them in.

In my opinion this man should have received a custodial sentence, and it sends out the message that you can do whatever you want, just as long as you come up with some sob story, and that if you are caught you might have to pick up a bit of litter. Pathetic.

Re: Love crimes and punishment.

To me this provides most of the answer to the other thread What Did We Do Wrong. Crime does pay.

of course crime pays especialy in teh case of drug dealers , even if caught they get minimal sentances and have loads of money to come out of prison to

unfortunatly the librarian was a propper tool because he sold the books very uner value and missed an oportunity to make some real money

saying that women can get away with murder if they blame it on their periods but a man who has to suffer the womans abuse can not kill her because she is on a period , not fair is it

Too many people don't seem to get punshed for anything these days. It starts with teachers not being allowed to discipline children in school and gets worse from there on.

It actually starts before that, parents aren't allowed to discipline children anymore.

And if they are very naughty do you throw them down all thirteen, but if they have only been a little bit naughty you push them off nearer the bottom?

Cool Re: Love crimes and punishment.

This phrase suspended sentence has always puzzled me. Does it mean that he would be hung for two years? If not, why not?

However I agree with you garinda. It is high time that criminals got a sentence that was harsh enough to deter them from trying again and a warning to others thinking about becoming lawless to think again. Wouldn’t a guaranteed full 12 months in chokey make someone think twice before committing a relatively minor crime?

Pitching the punishment in relation to how full the prisons happen to be at the time only encourages crime.

I don’t want to start a sex war but I also have to agree with chav1 that many women use their natural bodily functions as an excuse for everything.

Note the word ‘slap’ used by AccyJay. The PC brigade would voice that as hit. A sharp slap on the back of the legs or bum worked wonders in my era.
