Lunchtime Suprise

Its 60 years since the outbreak of WWII and on my way home from slave labour at work this morning I had the pleasure if somewhat scary of a fly past. It was the WWII Memorial flight and at a time when a camera would have been good, I didnt have one. It was 1 Lancaster bomber (1 of only 2 still flying i believe) a Spitfire and a Hurricane. It was the first time I have ever seen a flying Lancaster and it was awesome. Ok all 3 were from a part of a story in history full of heartbreak misery death and destruction but sadly was needed to give us our cherished freedoms today. I must admit though at approx 200 feet over Grangemouth I had to halt my bike and stare along with others as they roared over and i mean roar. Just wondering if we will ever forget what these aircraft stand for or if others have had the shock n awe of seeing them.

I went in that Lancaster (for a look round) at Blackpool airport about 35 years ago. There were only, I think, 2 still flying even then.

It's daft, as I was only 2 when the war ended, but I feel a great nostalgia when I see the Lanc or a Spitfire and they are 2 of only 3 planes I can easily recognise. The other's the Vulcan.

before one or two others jump down your throat about your honest mistake (typo), probably best to mention its 70 years not 60 years

Theres nothing can beat the sound of Rolls Royce Merlin engines at full throttle.
It used to scare the sh/one/t out of jerry.

My mum could distinguish the sound of german planes.
My dad (Auxilliary fireman) was at the fire station, and we were bunkered under the stairs, before the sirens went off.

I'm told (I don't remember) that, where our bombers' engines made a continuous drone sound, the German ones "throbbed".

It was easier to synchronise the engines on our aircraft, not sure why. Had a scary experience back in the late '60s. Sat in the car outside RAF Duxford eating lunch, heard an aircraft, didn't recognise it - single engined monoplane - then it got "bounced" by a Spitfire - Thought i was in the Twighlight Zone but it was the filming of the Battle of Britain film

I saw a Lancaster over 30 years ago down cambridgeshire way was working down there at the time, can remember lodes of people stopped their cars and standing at the road side watching that magnificent machine flying by
