Re: market house

I think footpaths are probably empty for a higher percentage of their opening time than the Market Hall

Agree, then 'Farm it out' to someone who knows how to run a market.
If the council want's to preserve the town centre then hand over the Charter to responsible traders for a few years....I've heard it said that traders are all wingers...That came from the useless nerd who has helped to destroy the market.....Traders are there to hopefully make a living and they don't take the opportunity of photo shoots to promote their standing.
Spend the money, but please put up new signs 'Under New Management'

Re: market house

Upgrading the market hall may bring in more shoppers and traders. It is very old fashioned (but not of a style that really appeals to people) Am sure the traders and shoppers would appreciate it when its done. Not sure about the management, maybe it does need handing over to someone who knows how to run it but I personally think that a bit of "doing up" would help

Sorry tosh the roads and footpaths are not the responcibility of H.B.C. its LCC you need to be addessing your complaints to.

Re: market house

I tried for two years with the Accrington Market Website... it was like flogging a dead horse...
In the end I gave in and binned it:

The Website was very good and it could have been better... however most did not want to know...

I think the whole market needs someone who knows what they are doing.... or its going to end up run down even more than it is....

Shame really, but I guess most people want to shop in one spot these days....

Re: market house

Think possibly the traders are a lot to do with how the Market is run. They carry weight and their views have to be taken into consideration.

Not sure how true it is but I heard that at the last refurb there were plans to make the Market Hall similar to Ossy Mills. In so much as shoppers would purchase items and pay at a dedicated paypoint, as opposed to paying the trader directly at their stall.

The traders blocked the idea. Draw your own conclusions as to why. The cynic in me thinks possibly they didn’t want the Tax man to know exactly what goes through their till, then again maybe they are just set in their ways.

As a trader would you, in all honesty trust any council to participate in the running of your affairs?....I think not.
Second question...have you ever run a business...I think not.

Think I myself would want to be in control of all of my takings Roy…so you thought right.

Secondly , you were correct again, I have never ran my own business. Just fail to see where you are going with making that point ( maybe it’s because I’ve never ran a business )

I’m merely pointing out that the traders have their say in what will or will not happen within the Market.

It has been stated that people seem to like to get their shopping in the one outlet these days, going down the Ossy Mills route would have provided that within the Market Hall, perhaps with a few tweaks. Seemed a good idea to me.

Re: market house

Ossy Mills isn't a market though, in fact I'm not even sure what they call it, is it a shopping outlet ?

Having a central point of payment would destroy the whole market concept to me.

I agree with that but provide a building that that is, to use a bit of political retoric, fit for purpose. Present a market on the same lines as the Supermarket...provide parking and provide the space to develope individual businesses...have the building well ventiated and heated, If it must be run on the Ossy Mills, very well thought out plan then so be it.
Does the plan for Accy town centre benefit the people from Church and Ossy...I dont think so.
I could go on but..............................

Just used Ossy Mills off to of my head as an example dave, I don’t know what you would describe the place as either.

I still think the way to have gone would have been with the single payment area. Just my opinion. I do see how it is in conflict with market traditions.

Dave...I accept that, but it is a comfortable shopping outlet, something Accrigton Market is not in it's present form.

Guess the powers that be already have their plans in place for how any cash is going to be spent. The plans will never suit everyone I guess but I’m sure the outcome will be scrutinised by the good folks here on the forum.
