Maternity Worldwide

I've just bee reading the link to 'Maternity Worldwide' posted by Lettie in another thread and found this both saddening and uplifting at the same time.

It's awful that the young woman could have been raped by someone she should have been able to trust, but even more awful that in her culture she is then the guilty one who is cast out by her family.

Great to hear that for her at least life is not now as awful as it might have been thanks to people who genuinely do care for others.

Re: Maternity Worldwide

A very touching story Willow, we dont know how lucky we are in this country for the care we receive and just living in a civalised society.

Re: Maternity Worldwide

We are indeed lucky in the UK in that at the moment women and babies actually receive some care. Unfortunately, due to cuts in the NHS, some of that care is to be withdrawn, meaning less choice and higher risks for childbearing women.

The aim is to cut the number of birth centres within the country. Birth centres have a higher rate of normal deliveries, higher patient satisfaction and more individualised care as opposed to the production line mentality of big teaching hospitals. I remember the furore when they closed the maternity unit at Accy Vic, which was in effect, our local birth centre. There is a petition now to save the remaining birth centres and you can add your name to it here:-

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Maternity/

Please support our birth centres, you never know when you or your family might need this type of care.

Re: Maternity Worldwide

Thanks Lettie. I've just added myself to it too. I heard on the radio this morning about cut backs with health visitors and saying that this can leave a lot of post natal depression unrecognised until much later if and when the mother sees her GP about it and by then it's affected the baby and it's harder for the mother and child to learn to bond.
