We are indeed lucky in the UK in that at the moment women and babies actually receive some care. Unfortunately, due to cuts in the NHS, some of that care is to be withdrawn, meaning less choice and higher risks for childbearing women.
The aim is to cut the number of birth centres within the country. Birth centres have a higher rate of normal deliveries, higher patient satisfaction and more individualised care as opposed to the production line mentality of big teaching hospitals. I remember the furore when they closed the maternity unit at Accy Vic, which was in effect, our local birth centre. There is a petition now to save the remaining birth centres and you can add your name to it here:-
