My daughter is a highly qualified nurse, and has saved many a life in her time, but never considerd her job any more important than my own job as sales in a textile industry helping to support employment for our people, to sustain a decent life style.

As is Her Majesty's, promoting the face of the U.K., which she does without faltering. We have to use every talent we have, emergency services are just part of the whole picture and should not be put on pedestals above all other segments of the equation.

But in a sense she is elected. She did get her position by the chance of birth, but she retains it with the consent of the people. I don’t know what sort of English you are using garinda but that sentence reads that thousands of hard workers have a liveried flunky to squeeze their toothpaste. Now if you had written ‘all WITHOUT’ then it would have made sense.

Why are you putting words into my mouth katex? I never stated anything about nurses etc. being more important than dustbinmen etc. My quoted selection of jobs was meant to represent all jobs compared to the pseudo job done by the queen.

Oh! I get it! You haven’t got a bona fide example to make to back up your claim so you try to twist what other people state to deflect their point.

In no sense whatsoever was the monarchy elected Eric. She retains her outdated position not with the consent of the people but because the people do not have a means of kicking her out short of using force. There are fewer pro royals than there are anti and couldn’t give a Tinker’s cuss royals.

I have nothing against her personally, my beef is against the institution and what it represents. I am a citizen of the UK (England) not a subject of the monarchy.

Considering that the whole world knows these islands are called the United Kingdom it is not so strange. It’s like calling a spade a spade.

I refer to this sceptred isle as Great Britain, and not the eighteenth century name which, came about by the union of royal kingdoms, which as a republican I prefer to ignore.

As for the last word, it's terribly sweet of you, but I need no-one's permission to claim that.

Happily I take after my great uncle, Joe Aspinall. When he was Chairman (Mayor) of Oswaldtwistle District Council in the '60's, he had to go to a garden party at Buckingham Palace, and as a staunch republican and socialist, refused to stand for the National Anthem, as the Queen arrived.

Forty years later I was at a concert at the Barbican in London. It was announced that would we all rise for her Royal Highness Princess Michael of Kent.

Er...yeah right.

She was sat in the row in front of us, and I was the only one to remain seated as the Austrian/Australian former hairdresser took her royal seat.

As I sat there, I knew Uncle Joe would be looking proudly down at me.

I thought Great Britain only meant England, Scotland and Wales and that to include N. Ireland you have to say United Kingdom, as in "the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland."
