Meaning of sayings.
After reading the explination behind GC's white rabbits is there any other phrases that we say and what is the reason behind it? For starters what about "good morning Mr Magpie" when we see one on its own. Where does it originate from and whats the meaning behind it.

Re: Meaning of sayings.
In a book I have on old folklore is says that 'magpies are a bird of omen'
An old rhyme is used to interpret what sort of omen:-
"I saw 7 magpies in a tree
Six for you and one for me
One for sorrow, two for mirth
Three for a wedding and four for a birth
Five for silver, six for gold
Seven for a secret never to be told"
I suppose greeting a solitary magpie was to ward off the 'sorrow'

When , as child, it was time for bed, my dad said "Up the nemos"
I never understood it until I saw this

Re: Meaning of sayings.
i sometimes say when i see the first star at night...
Star Light Star bright,
The first star I see tonight,
I wish I may, I wish I might,
Have the wish I wish tonight.

Re: Meaning of sayings.
I always thought it was...:-
one for sorrow,
two for joy,
three for a letter,
four for a boy,
five for silver,
six for gold,
seven for a secret never to be told
guess i was wrong...lol

Re: Meaning of sayings.
With these old folklore type sayings there's often more than one version as they've been handed down over generations and can have been changed somewhere along the way.
