Typical tory tactic - move the goalposts this thread is about the miners strike. nowt to do with the current situation, other threads are.

Re: Miners Strike
No miner's strike.
No Billy Elliot.
So at least one young Geordie got a job out of it.
On a more serious notes one of my closest friends at college in 1984 was the daughter of a miner from south Yorkshire. He was forty nine when it started, and never worked again, and not through lack of trying.

It was through knowing this friend's family that I got to know and see some of the devastation that was caused.
It wasn't just a few miners, it was the whole community that suffered. Village after village, town after town, and a whole generation of people thrown on a bigger scrap heap than was ever created by any mine workings.

I am no expert on mining, but it probably isn't that easy to reopen pits once they had been shut for some time.
The pity was that a lot of the pits were closed in the first place. This country could have been self sufficent in coal for years.
What couldn't be repaired as well was the close communities, that were destroyed as a result of the misguided policy of closing the pits.
