Minimum pay for bank holidays. Am i right....

Am i right in thinking that if you work on a bank holiday you must be paid double time by law or am i wrong? One of my friends is working at a well know accrington nigthspot from the hours of 2300 and 0500/0600 on new years eve. Any help would be great.

Don't think there is any law which states extra money for Bank Holidays. Depends on contract of employment as far as I know.

I too think it varies from firm to firm. I've worked loads of Bank Holidays, and usually got double time and a day in lieu.

There is some information about it on this link.

Theres nothing says they have to pay you any extra, as long as you get 20 days off a year (8 bank holidays can be included in the 20 days) thats all the employer needs to give you, its all down to your contract of employment, we get double time and a day in lieu but they try their best not to have us in on bank holidays

The only bank holidays I am entitled to is Crimbo and New Years Days. We do get an extra allocation though as compensation as the bank holidays are considered a normal working day. I dont get extra money but the manpower bods do though it dosnt matter if they are back shift as they get the same as dayshift.

I get teh day off but if I work I get double + a day in lieu
as others have said though, they aren't protected by any law, its down to individual contract. They did give you a contract didn't they If not then there is room for having the day off without them sacking you as they haven't said that they are normal working days.

But remember custom and practice does come into it, ie if you have never had bank holidays and have no contract, even the courts take custom and practice has a form of contract. Thats one thing to remember if a firm changes your contract, if you refuse to sign and they give you the 90 days notice then you start doing the "new changes" you have agreed

Yes but New Years up for you in Scotland nearly lasts until Burn's Night, not just one measly days Bank Holiday as it is for us down here.

Yes I remember it well. I worked for an English company when I was living in Glasgow, and it took all my special powers to convince them that in Scotland both the first and the second are a Bank Holiday, and if we couldn't have them both off we would cover ourselves in woad, and meet them at Hadrian's Wall for a bit of a skirmish.

All the Scottish staff got two days off.
