Modern Monopoly
Just read today, on Ceefax I think, that Monopoly has gone high tech.
Instead of paper cash they now use plastic to move the cash around. The game comes with a mini computer and players just slot in their plastic to make payments etc.
But they will still make Monopoly using paper money for the foreseeable future.

Re: Modern Monopoly
I don't like it when things like this happen. Monopoly is one of the best board games that I've ever played. The original version, in my opinion at least, is by far the best out of all the spinoffs (Star Wars, simpsons, junior). How am I meant to pile up wads of £100s now? I like the way that it has remained in its original state for so long. Buying a house in Old Kent Road for £50? I wish it were still possible today...

Re: Modern Monopoly
I’m undecided DeShark although but if pushed for a decision right now I would have to be with you.
I’m not a Luddite and I like all the new technology around but some things are best left alone.
Ha! That’s upset my spell checker. It doesn’t like Luddite.

Lol, perhaps it's best if we all just let this one drop eh? As long as someone's post is legible and they make a reasonable effort not to make mistakes, I don't think it's too great a crime.
I'm also a big sucker for sticking to the official rules. They work fine in my opinion and there's no reason why Free Parking should start giving out big lottery bonuses, nor that I shouldn't be able to buy on my first time round the board.
Playing monopoly taught me a fair bit looking back on it, not least that my Dad could be a stubborn guy at times. But I agree with Cyfr that addition and subtraction will suffer as a result. I'm all for change, but this newfangled version just seems like unnecessary change for the sake of rekindled interest and larger profit margins for Hasbro...

Re: Modern Monopoly
I should think that by the time that someone is old enough to understand the rules of Monopoly they should already be able to add up and subtract money, if nothing else. By the time that I was 8 or 9 I could add up cash and I had to contend with pounds, shillings, pence, halfpennies and even farthings.
For those who haven’t a clue what I’m on about it was like this:
Four farthings made one penny.
Two halfpennies made one penny.
Twelve pence equalled one shilling.
20 shillings equalled one pound also known as a sovereign.
Then there was the guinea, which equalled one pound, one shilling.
So try adding £3 – 15 – 10½ to £7 – 9 - 4¾
Answer £11 - 5 - 3¼

Come here to New Jersey, if you really like Monopoly. I'll take you to the original avenues of the game (in Atlantic City, of course), have a nice stroll on the Boardwalk, then (for those who wish to engage), let you exchange your pounds for the original Monopoly currency - $US - and show you our casinos!
Of course, if you want decent beer, you'll need to look elsewhere. The Shoulder of Mutton comes to mind - repeatedly!

Re: Modern Monopoly
Nothing, but nothing would entice me to play this boring, drawn-out, once you are losing no chance of recovery; giving the opportunity of the winners to procrastinate and gloat cause you 'aint enough money to pay up, board of torture.... no matter whatever the format for payment. Grrrrrrh .. hate it !!!

not so, not if you play by the rules to the letter, and you use your money, and moves wisely. I've turned a game around from losing against someone who had multiple properties with hotels.
