Re: Mystery Guest
Oh Kate, that's a shame (adjoining wall). How on earth did it get in?
I'd go next door and tell them to take a brick or 2 out of the wall, their side (you don't want the hassle). Explain to them that the prevailing winds will precipitate an updraught in a Northerly direction (or Southerly, or whichever direction they are from you) and if the bird dies they will have the resulting smell. Do this in your best scientist voice, as though you really know what you're talking about, and it might work.

Re: Mystery Guest
Oh that's really sad, poor little thing.
When my Mum and Dad moved house I heard a noise in the front bedroom upstairs and Mum and I were both afraid to go in as we didn't know what it was. She was saying they'd have to sell the house again because it was haunted! My Dad went up to have a listen and came back down laughig his head off. A bird had fallen down the chimney and was behind the blocked off fireplace. It had only been blocked off with wood so he ripped it out and set the bird free - it proceeded to flap soot all over the bedroom!

Re: Mystery Guest
Well, no chirps since last night >> thinking positive that it made its way out.
Thanks everyone >> ok know the comedians were only trying to make me feel better about it.
Brought many a fallen bird home in a cardboard box and lined it with cotton wool when I was little, never seemed to survive though.
Read recently that you should just leave them, as more often than not the parents will be watching and eventually the little one will recover and find the strength to get back to safety.
Talking of things in your loft, every year get bats nesting under my eaves, can hear them squeeking. Rang the council as worried may do some damage or carry some sort of disease. Didn't realize that they were a protected species at this stage and the council lad said "oh, you lucky thing" Uh !! .. you don't wake up to black droppings all over yer car every morning. However, he put my mind at rest that they wouldn't do any damage. Didn't get them last year and missing them now. Come back bats >> all is forgiven.

Re: Mystery Guest
There are alot of things concerning animals that also make me sad. In fact, some make me sick. Only last week I read in the paper of the annual Canadian baby seal cull. It was nauseating to read.
Here we have a bunch of lads, slogging away in the one of the most hostile of work environments known to man and doing their best to protect their jobs and livelihoods in the local fishing industry when along flys in this loud-mouthed billionaire scouser with his vegatarian parasite mrs shouting for the killing to stop.
I know if I had have been on the ice, I would have ignored the vermin and predatory baby seals and gone straight for Mr & Mrs Paul McCartney. Indeed, I would have taken upmost delight in using Mrs McCartneys own peg-leg on her own self-rightous head and that of her husband.

Perhaps it would have been more humane to get that team in that tried to save the London whale, with their success rate the result you want would be guaranteed!

Re: Mystery Guest
Oh no !! Got another one, sorta' pulls at the heart strings ..there seems to be a vent type ridge tile on my roof, wonder if they are going in through there .. ah well, may find out soon as, after the winds, think most may need replacing.

Re: Mystery Guest
I adore birds (only the ones with wings and beaks)
the only type im not so keen on are starlings but i still feed them-had loads on my lawn this morning (assuming because the rain bought all the worms out).
During a midnight run in the car me and a friend saw some Grouse the other night,i got so excited!hehe
Living down south i was fortunate to see Cormorants and other birds you dont find up here.
Im gona turn into a twitcher soon-got some books and binoculars for mesel
not sure Jack will be keen on the idea of sitting on the edge of fields in silence for hours-but hey!
I'm sure i was born later than i was meant to-not many 22 year old 'twitchers' about

Has it or has it not escaped? the smell and the inevitable bluebottles will be the proof of the pudding.

No still chirping Ian .. sorry added to this thread .. going through it all again must be a hassle .. never got the bluebottles before, maybe 'cause not many about at this time of year.
Is it too cold for flies now ?? Yuk, horrible thought I know, but do corpses get invaded in the winter ?... brrrrrh.
