National Lottery Good Causes

In the 10 years since the National Lottery was launched (10th anniversary on 4th Nov) millions upon millions of pounds have gone to good causes up and down the country.

Here is a list of how local boroughs have fared;

£25.87m – Blackburn
£7.35m – Hyndburn
£15.38m – Burnley
£12.51m – Pendle
£9.38m – Rossendale

Now before you get all irate about the lack of money coming to the borough don't start blaming the Lottery itself. If you want this money you have to apply for it, if you don't apply for it they don't just think 'oh, Hyndburn hasn't had much let's give them some more'.

I'm not getting at the Council either because Council's aren't allowed to apply for Lottery funding (although they could be a bit more proactive in their support for initiatives). It's down to community spirit, or lack of it perhaps! Local community groups can apply and in most cases receive money for all sorts of good causes (events, building repairs, new projects, etc).

So, I'm telling you - the money is out there - if you are part of any sort of community group you are entitled to apply for it. If you are daunted by the forms ask someone who knows what they're doing but don't complain because someone else is getting all the cash!

Re: National Lottery Good Causes

If its that bad then all the orginisations that could benifit from a grant need a quick kick where it hurts. Ok they would have to fight for it but the end result would be worth it. The initiatives for the young would be a good start if a champion can be found. With some pro active help from HBC then why can we not "win" our share?

You can add 19 million to the Blackburn figure.

That was the amount of money that Asian guy won, before he left his wife and decided to go back to India.

Re: National Lottery Good Causes

what the lottery calls good causes and what i call good causes probably differs quite a lot lol but at least some money has made it to our neck of the woods

how do you apply for a grant off the lottery anyway i have been wanting to open a cat sanctuary/curry house for quite a while now and could do with some funding

Re: National Lottery Good Causes

Actually, I have got one thing wrong - I was under the impression that the Council couldn't apply but it looks like there are a few applications in. Which makes me wonder why they couldn't apply for the Heritage fund for Friends of Rhyddings Park money themselves.

Re: National Lottery Good Causes

Maybe they think it is beneath them to apply. At the end of the day the people in their wards bought tickets and if they dont win at least the council could apply for grants for the bourgh for something people say they contributed to.

Re: National Lottery Good Causes

Cheers Gayle. I’d like to see an application made to turn this around before it’s two late. The area behind which includes the pool and the Bridge would also be part of it. So would the half way marker just beyond the Church Kirk Bridge. The all theme could be focused of the fact that this is the centre of the Leeds and Liverpool. Park, Lettie and Willow pointed out some of what could be done to promote a self funding environment after the work was done. Skipton is one idea, Old Nell’s another “a bit tacky” but it works and it’s always full.

Re: National Lottery Good Causes

Does anyone actually know anybody who has won a substantial amount on the Lottery?

As far as I can see it's just a tax on poor people, that they choose to pay, rather than have to.

Good luck to them all.

Re: National Lottery Good Causes

Well over the last couple of months alone I've had £17k but I know that's not what you mean.

I know two people who've won - one got around £2,500 on his own, the other was part of a syndicate and her share was about £2,000.

I don't play the lottery anymore - haven't done for ages, but I'm quite happy to use it for funding.

Re: National Lottery Good Causes

Sorry, I forgot - I've currently got bids in for around £55k for various projects and I'm in the middle of putting together some bids for £120k. Well someone's got to start bringing some serious money back to the borough!

At least you are making an effort Gayle and I applaud you for it.

Re: National Lottery Good Causes

Thank you, and I'll happily help anyone else - I know how daunting the forms are for the first time. Plus, you've got to do it in application 'speak'!

Re: National Lottery Good Causes

I think the funding of worthy causes is fantastic, in fact I would like to see all the profits given back in this way rather than to Camelot.

It just makes me laugh when people who play it complain about where the small part of the profits that is given to worthy causes goes. People play in the hope of becoming rich beyond their wildest dreams. If they really wanted to fund only the projects they deemed suitable, they could do.

I was thinking about this as I lay on the beach last January. Happy in the thought that my holiday had been paid for by not giving Camelot a pound a
week for the last ten years.
