neighbourhood watch programs in UK

Lots of posts on Accy-web about anti social behaviour , just wondring how many areas/streets have "neighbourhood watch' programs ......the local busybodies peeping out from behind the lace curtains...no way am I condeming these folks , I think they do a valuable community sevice, but just surprised that there hasn't been much mention of them from folks who complain about un-social behaviour .........
Just how many Accy - web users are members of their local "neighbour hood watch " program and whats the reaction/co-ordination from the local police

You will find that many of those that complain about what is going on are the "talkers" and not the "doers". Organising or even attending monthly meetings would get in the wat of Eastenders or Corrie.

Also at the moment is this area support from the Police appears to be very lacking.

There is not a Neighbourhood Watch for my house but there is one around the park. I sometimes attend that one and less than 10% of the houses in the watch area attend the meeting. At the last meeting there were 6 or 7 people not counting me.

I was talking to a chap Te other week who was interested in forming something around the Mallard Place area, seemed very keen and said he would keep me updated. I can remember when I first move on Mallard over 20 years ago, the then Wife tried to get a neighbourhood watch going but nobody seemed interested. I have to say hat w don't have to many problems around my home, but would be interested to here if its the same where MargaretR lives which is further over towards the the playing fields

in those posts lies the answer i reckon. the apathy/sod it attitude in enshrined in the british mentality, some may not like that comment, but its true, the best barrack room lawyers in the world. until theres a war or dust up.then magically they become solid n probably the best fighting force on the planet, never understood it, but thats the way i see it.

Whilst I agree with what you say to a certain extent Cashy I also feel that people are scared and with very good reason of getting involved. In our day if somebody complained that we had been misbehaving we would get short shrift at home. Nowadays a lot of parents seem to think their little darlings are angels. You are likely to get thumped for raising your concerns and as for confronting the little dears not much chance of many people doing that. You just never know if they will turn nasty.

I agree Bernadette. I know if I have reported any issues to the police with regards to anti-social behaviour etc wherever I have lived the back up you get is less than zero.

think thats only a small part of it Bernie, if ya look back many many years at fer example " Elections" either local or general turn outs show apathy, same fer council meetings, union meetings,etc etc, always been poorly supported, apathy again. many only bother if things directly effect them. gives me no pleasure to say it, but its reality.

Kingston has a very active neighbourhood watch, which works very closely with the Kingon Police services. In fact, if anyone wishes to find out about neighbourhood watch in Kingston, the address is Neighbourhood Watch, c/o Kingston Police Force, 705 Division Street, Kingston, K7L 4X3. There is a senior constable whose prime responsibility is the Neighbourhood Watch. I do believe that the Police Coordinator is presently Constable Mike Menor .... Apart from this formal structure Kingston still has that small town informal structure where neighbours keep an eye on one another's homes and property. For example, when my next door neighbours are away, I check on their house (they leave me a key) and make sure that the mail doesn't build up in their mail box. In winter, I shovel out their driveway to give the house that lived in look.

I was a NW group coord in Burnley, total waste of time IYAM!
It was no help at al, police were of no help.
All it did was got a small % off the house insurance

I still ended up being the one to call police over any problems, something that would have been done without the scheme anyway.
