I'm sure that you and many, many others including me would return the trolley after use.
However there are a multitude of trolleys that have been abandoned around town to show that quite a few other people do nick the free ones.

One of the complaints about the self service tills was that they required less staff to oversee them so jobs could be lost, the same can apply to returning trolleys - if you leave it in the car park then a trolley boy needs to be employed to return it.
having had a family member employed as this I can see how always returning them would have made him redundant.

All supermarket tills will easily be changed to accept the new coinage, they make such huge profits that it's a drop in the ocean for them.
Older vending machines may soon be the only place (apart from at the bank) to dispose of unreturned (and possibly fake) old coins. Perhaps we ought to have a Poundwatch thread around the time to identify where still has them
