I've just finished reading Digital Fortress by the same guy. For anyone who is already remotely paranoid about privacy and governments snooping on us, this is not the book to read. If what he says is true, every email is routed through a massive computer which reads emails for subversive text, it even checks for encrypted ones and for coded ones. It then cracks the code and reads the email anyway.

I should imagine it would be more interested in encrypted ones than non encrypted ones.

Re: New Pope Elected

Sad fact - conspiracy theory sells books - so does dismal prophecy. I bet Nostradamus made quite a bit in his time out of his prophetic talents. (Yes, I am an old cynic, and proud of it). The Catholic Church has been accused of conspiracy on various points over several hundred years, as has the Jewish community (anyone read that superb bit of black propaganda - The Protocols of Zion?). It appeals to the paranoid lurking inside us all.

As for every e-mail being scanned, encryption broken, read, etc ... any idea how much computing power you would require? - and for what? - to find out that Fred's auntie has had her varicose veins done? Sorry, can't believe that one.

Anyone over 30 should have a past - it's just unfortunate that the new Pope grew up in a repressive regime where you either conformed or were at risk. And if you want Nazis under the bed, you don't have far to look - try the National Front.
