New Road Narrowing

Cycling past The Walton Arms this week I noticed that the road up to Clayton has been narrowed and paths installed. From being a safe, wide road to use we poor cyclists are now forced out towards the juggernauts exiting Altham Business Park.
Is there no-one in the council (local or district) who represents our interests when these planning decisions are being made? I presume not judging from the number of ill-sited cycle lanes.

Re: New Road Narrowing

This is revenge for cyclists irresponsibly riding two or even three abreast down narrow country lanes thereby preventing anyone passing.

Re: New Road Narrowing

Yep that gets my goat to, along with anyone over the age of ten who cycles on the pavement

Re: New Road Narrowing

Hasn't anyone told the council that the government is paying by the metre for new cycle lanes? In other counties, cyclists are given priority lanes even if it is only 3 metres long.

I know of one road that has a wide pavement and the council put a cycle lane on the inside, away from the traffic. Several elderly residents have already been "run over" as they have exited their property..........but, hey, the council make a profit so who cares!!

Re: New Road Narrowing

Do you have the insane cycle lanes which start and end in mid air? What are the cyclists meant to do? Take off?

We have a pavement with the pedestrian area at the road edge but the actual width marked out on the ground doesn't allow for the width of the average shoulders. Presumably it was measured by a council worker looking at the width of two adjacent feet.

Re: New Road Narrowing

Most of our cycle lanes are about four yards long, the important ones having red tarmac and most of them have a van parked over them. The longest on the road from Accrington to Burnley actually narrows what was once a very wide road and with the addition of safety islands has made it less safe for cyclists. If the council has money to waste on these schemes why don`t they ask the opinions of the people who use them?
