New year, why now?

Although our year is based on Christ's life, or death, but why does our new year start on January the first?

Anno Domini, B.C., I understand all that, but why doesn't are year start after Easter then or something?

Oh my head hurts.

Re: New year, why now?

Just realised this should really been in any questions rather than here.

It's so confusing I wasn't thinking straight, sorry.

Re: New year, why now?

Is it not that the year starts in January because of the seasonal phases of the farming calendar as apposed to the Christian element.

Re: New year, why now?

Yes Gregorian, Julian, but it's all based around the birth and death of Jesus.

What year, and what calendar was in use when the census happened in Bethlehem when Jesus was born?

If B.C. is before Christ, and A.D. is after Jesus death, what happened to the thirty three or so years in the middle? Does the calendar start at his birth or his death?

Why January the first as the start of the new year, that's really got nothing to do with the Christian calendar?

Re: New year, why now?

So Jesus was probably born in 'the fall' in Bethlehem.

Ain't that just so cute?

Y'all have a nice day, ya hear?

Re: New year, why now?

England began its numbered year on March 25 (Lady Day or Annunciation Day), between the 13th century and 1752 January 1 was called New Year's Day, and was, with Christmas and occasionally Twelfth Night, a holiday when gifts were exchanged. 364 days (365 in leap years) remain in the year after this day

I'm stopping in tomorrow night. I shall do the English thing and not be a European sheep. I shall celebrate the new year on Lady Day.

Wasn't she also known as Billie Holliday, what date's that????

Re: New year, why now?

1 B.C., O, 1 A.D. 2 A.D. etc, it doesn't make sense. If Jesus was born in the year zero, he didn't die until 33 A.D. Which means he lived from 0 -33 A.D. Which meand he lived in the Anno Domini bit which is daft.

I think they should go back to the drawing board. We should go metric anyway.
