Re: New Zealand Earthquake
My two daughters live in Christchurch and work in the CBD. One was at home at her mums, but the youngest was at work. My sister alerted me at work of the shake (I'm in the North Island), and I frantically tried to get hold of them. The phones were down. Imagine my relief when i got a text from Danielle(youngest) to say she was OK. She had fled her building, out into the street and turned to see other buildings crumbling before her. Early days, but she believes she has lost a workmate-unconfirmed. I was pretty 'emotional when it struck me how close I was to loseing my wee girl. Still, I will give her a 'growling' for forgetting the earthquake drills we were taught at school which tell us NOT to run out into the street. Her building seems to have survived- her workmate was in a shop nearby. It was lunchtime.

Re: New Zealand Earthquake
Glad to hear your family are safe John. My sisters family are well away from it so safe too. Was quite suprised to read my nieces comments on facebook that although they want to give blood they aren't allowed to because they are from the UK

Re: New Zealand Earthquake
Thanks Dave and Shillelagh...hate to tell you this Dave, but if your sis is still in Paraparaumu (P'ram) they are on 'shakey sands' cause thats exactly what that town is built on-sand.Thats the worst thing for an earthquake. Still, Kapiti Island will shelter them from any tidalwave.
Can't fathom that blood thing unless its the Lancashire accent and the Government , quite rightly, don't want to risk Man.Utd blood entering our society...

Possibly something to do with BSE, I know over here we (Then Brit Military) used to have the vampires turn up twice a year at the camps to get blood from us, then we had the kick off about BSE & they stopped coming & I believe it's still in effect today. So I'd assume it's the same reasoning due to KJD being able to lie dormant for many years.
John glad your family are fine.

Re: New Zealand Earthquake
hope everyone effected is ok and its good to see members out there posting to let us know whats going on and that they are ok
hopefully all the UK's corner shops will be putting out their earthquake collection tins to help the victims of this disaster but as of yet none seem to have appeared like they did when pakistan had their earthquakes
but im sure they will ...

Re: New Zealand Earthquake
Like other posters, I hope everyone who has friends/family out in NZ hears from them soon........and my thoughts are with those who have lost family in the quake.
Mother Nature seems a bit of a grumpling at present.
Stay safe folks out in NZ.

Re: New Zealand Earthquake
They held a 2 minutes silence at the time of the earthquake yesterday ...
BBC News - Rebuilding Christchurch 'stone by stone'
They've also found what they think are 2 time capsules ... that were in the plinth of a statue of the founder of christchurch john robert godley ...
BBC News - NZ quake unearths 'time capsules'
I know new zealand is a well to do country when compared wi haiti but still i would have thought they would have opened a collection .. especially as what theyve been saying a lot of the people who lived in and around christchurch couldnt get insurance after the last earthquake in september of last year ....
