Brits keen to head Down Under: poll

Young British travellers know where the bloody hell Australia is and they can't want to come here, a poll finds.
According to the survey, conducted by guidebook publisher Lonely Planet, Australia beat the US, New Zealand, India, Italy and even popular holiday destinations Spain and Thailand as the next country young British travellers most want to visit.
Tourism Australia managing director Scott Morrison said the results of the survey were "welcome news" for Australia, following the recent "So where the bloody hell are you?" campaign.
"Young travellers are a key, high-yield market, with their high dispersal and length of stay delivering immediate economic benefit to regional, rural and remote communities around Australia," Mr Morrison said in a statement.
"We will continue to take the necessary steps to ensure that these young people continue to make Australia their number one destination in the world."
Mr Morrison said an expansion to the range of industries where backpackers could work to qualify for a visa extension, announced last year by Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone, was having a major positive effect on Australian tourism

Is this "Damage Limitation?"

According to the press over the past few years, Australia is more dangerous to back packers than a stroll through Blackburn or Burnley on a saturday night! I just can't imagine that many young people prefer Australia to the States, New Zealand or Thailand.

To diverse a bit, gay & lesbian's looking to ban the term MUM & DAD in schools over here, Also Tasmania thinking of banning smoking in cars. Thank God a lot of us on accyweb can remember what freedom was, ( by the way I have never smoked fags ) so it dosnt bother me, but its just another liberty taken away. Soon it will be 6 alcohlic drinks per person a day. I know the mind is selective and we tend to remember the good times, but life was so much more simple 30, 40, years ago. I will be in the UK on August 1st, so I will be in for a shock on how much it has changed, since I was last there in 1975.

I was in Hobart , HMS Albion early 1959,with photo's of docking, but I expect Tasmania has changed since I was there!

Isn't it funny how the puffters & the politically-correct get so worked up about terminology? It was not that long ago that the adjective 'gay' referred to someone who was carefree and merry; then, of course, the word was hijacked and came to mean something completly different.

Well, it looks like the meaning of the word has changed once again - these days, it is used by the kids to refer to Rubbish! But don't take my word for it...take that of the BBC, an organisation right at rhe forefront of PC.

To answer two questions, I will be staying with my mum & dad in Blackburn cash for two weeks, from 1st Aug. So I will be in Accy, Clayton etc, a few times in the two weeks, it would be great to see you, if you can make it cash. TC, Hobart has'nt changed that much, still a beautifull City, unspoilt, still has the old buildings, they did'nt do the 60s thing and demolish them.

I can well understand why people want to go to Australia for hols, backpacking etc and the results of the poll are no surprise. When a British backpacker goes missing we hear it on the news but in reality there haven't been that many. Australia is still a relatively safe and largely unpopulated country with populations tending to hang around the cities. Vast areas of this country are empty and contain lots of superb national parks and UNESCO World Heritage sites eg, Great Barrier Reef, Kakadu National Park, Uluru, Blue Mountains, Purnululu (the Bungle Bungles) and Shark Bay where you can view the oldest living things on Earth - Stromatolites...

There is an element of risk when you consider travelling to Australia and this makes it rather appealing. People aside, there are more natural things there that can kill you or cause permanent injury than anywhere else in the world....... Box jellyfish, Blue ringed octapus, poisonous fish, spiders, snakes, sharks and crocodiles.

Australia is packed with all this brilliant stuff and I for one can't wait to go and see it.....

i agree with lettie on this one ......i also found the people very friendly i loved all the scenary ..not as green i may add as ours but still good ...i did see a couple of bush fires & flooding whilst i was there but on the whole it was brilliant ...wish i could get my head in gear to do the flight again ...but i can't ...............alan we can make arrangements to meet you in our stag one night if you wanted ....would be great to see & meet you .
