Re: Nine Virtues

1 Courage - Prefer Balenciaga.
2 Truth - Too much of a diplomat to answer.
3 Honour - Big amongst thieves.
4 Fidelity - Fiddle-dee-dee! I'm with Scarlett O'Hara.
5 Discipline - Yes, I'll give it, to those weak souls who need it.
6 Hospitality - N.H.S. food is slop.
7 Self Reliance - Nobody does it better, or as well.
8 Industriousness - My feet weren't made for clogs.
9 Perseverance - Lovely chap. I know his mother very well.

She dumped her sexy French Philosophy Professor shortly after writing this song for him...to go and marry some other ugly little chap with foreign sounding surname...bad move, although at least the Prof is available for someone else

Oooh! We like the suggestion of "a past", and that it might be "dark" adds immeasurably to the frisson.

Byron society - Oxford, Cambridge or Dublin?

You don't know the half.

I do.

That was only the first, tamer half. So I'm told.

Re: Nine Virtues

Courage......I don't know, but I have done things that I never thought I would do.
Sometimes, stupidity masquerades as courage.
Truth.........There are many versions of this.......mine, yours and something that is
perhaps, a mixture of the two. Absolute truth can be damaging....and
a 'fiblet' is kinder...unless you have no compassion in your soul.
Honour......Thy father and thy mother........I'm not sure about anything else.
Fidelity.......Yes, I am faithful....but then so is an old dog. Maybe temptation has
not been put in my way...or it wasn't tempting enough. Or maybe I
couldn't be bothered.
Discipline.....It was the name on a leather strap my father had hanging on the wall in
the pantry. Yes, I have a strong sense of discipline.
Hospitality....will accept it if given in the right manner.and with good grace
Self Reliance - like G....I think I have heaps of it. You can only trust yourself to do
things exactly the way you want them. Only you know your
your standards.
Industriousness - my feet weren't made for clogs either.......so I worked my way out
of them and into something better....yes I am industrious.......
you have to be, to get what you want.

Perseverance - Yes, single minded and indomitable. God loves a trier.

When my muse decides to inspire me - I may elaborate on the wilder half...

Until then I feel moved to share the following "purple verse" with you which relates to that particular time in Oxford....

PUNTING ON AN AFTERNOON

They punted and they laughed,
Telling tale out of school,
From long-stemmed crystal quaffed,
Fine champers gold and cool,
And soon got gently ****ed,
As the day slipped away,
These days so sorely missed,
In our mem'ries will stay.

This is to be found inside a card showing "Boating on the River Epte" by Claude Monet, the inscription reads:

D,
this card inspired me to dash out some purple verse. Please forgive me!
Byronically yours, S.

(S, aka "The Prince of Darkness", a JRF in Philosophy at All Souls College.)

Memento of a particular day punting on the Cherwell past Parson's Pleasure.

Re: Nine Virtues

Only joking! I thought the poem was spiffing. Better than I got.

I came away from college with a picture of a raindrop and underneath inscibed in red chinese characters "Yesterday's name in puddles"

Needless to say I am still puzzling over that one.

Re: Nine Virtues

Helpfully the Catholic Church concentrates the nine virtues, which I think may be an Anglican distinction, into a more easily manageable four Cardinal Virtues.

Prudence - able to judge between actions with regard to appropriate actions at a given time
Justice - proper moderation between self-interest and the rights and needs of others
Restraint or Temperance - practicing self-control, abstention, and moderation
Courage or Fortitude - forbearance, endurance, and ability to confront fear and uncertainty, or intimidation

They were originally developed from Plato.

The term "cardinal" comes from the Latin cardo or hinge; the cardinal virtues are so called because they are hinges upon which the door of the moral life swings.

Needless to say I am a lapsed Catholic....

I do like swinging even at my age....'tis the inner child in me.

The images that post calls forth make me blush. And the more I consider it, the worse it gets.

Which of these 4 or 9 virtues, covers interfering with choir boys.

1. Courage: The bags are lovely G, but you'd need real courage to wear some of the fashion. (See attached photo -have just ordered this creation)

5. Discipline: Being a weak soul I definitely need it - but you already know that. Up for a bit more "give, give, give" ?
