Watching the evening news and saw a report that Cameron in light of the recent riots has decided to bring in an American as a "special advisor" on policing matters, think if I was a cop in the UK I would be a tad upset at the lack of confidence shown and if I was one of the 40 or so Chief Constables in England and Wales my resignation would be laying on Camerons desk at start of play Monday morning , though how many would actually have the cojones to actually quit would be debatable since I suppose more than a few only got the job in first place due to 'fast-tracking/extra points' due to race/gender/sexual orientation/religion


note, not knocking American cops think they do a good/reasonable job over here in the US will the handcuffs politicians/lawyers place on them , would be just as upset/concerned if Obama decided to appoint a Brit as head of the FBI .

Again a disgrace and insult to the Police here who have worked hard under the upmost pressure..and that's all they need .. even more pressure from a PM who has lost the plot big time.

Cameron can ask who he likes for advice I suppose but i wonder how much this man's advice is going to cost at a time when they are trying to save money and are cutting funds so drastically in policing already. I think it's all a bit of spin, we're supposed to think this person will come and have the answers to all the problems of gang crime. The UK and American cultures are so different and as far as i can see there is much more violent and gun related crime in the USA - so I think this shows just how good the British police force is as they are mostly unarmed.
I know that the Met have come under quite a bit of criticism recently for incidents in crowd control, allegations of corruption related to the hacking of phones by The NOTW etc. All things considered these issues get dealt with by an independent complaints system and anyone found to be acting outside the rules is eventually made to pay. The numbers of these cases is small considering the size of the staff involved and the number of cases handled every year.
The system they have over the pond is so different with mayors, police etc being elected and therefore under direct political control whereas the British police force is an autonomous body which has been protecting the people of the UK for over 170 years -I say, let them get on with their jobs they serve all the people not just their electors agendas, god-forbid they try to adopt a system similar to that in America...

There's never been rioting or civil unrest in the United States.

Be good to know how this has been achieved.

the thing is he would probably reak every british law trying to achieve his goals.i heard the current strathclyde chief constable is in line to take the job.so this might just be paper talk.

Just maybe, if we get shut of the majority of mindless & ill thought out restraints, had harsher penalties which were applied more vigorously including Corporal & Capital punishment. A judiciary & politicians who would listen to the majority of law abiding citizens & implement their requests & those lawyers, bleeding heart liberals who defend the criminal classes had to share the punishment of their deadbeat "clients" I'm pretty sure we could find Senior officers & other ranks with the will & ability to sort our own problems in house without having to go abroad !

Until such time we're stuck with the mess we have at present & there will continue to be a cry for outside assistance in the forms of such as Bill Bratton or people like Sheriff Joe Arpaio, because they appear to get results for minimum cost to the long suffering tax payer.

Seems they have had to apply a curfew on teenagers in the city of Philadelphia for the time being too....
