Alcohol free pub plan for Oswaldtwistle (From Lancashire Telegraph)

As usual the Telegraph aren't quite right with their facts.

We already have a non-alcoholic pub in East Lancashire, the Temperance Bar in Rawtenstall opened in 1890.

BBC - Lancashire - Places - Rawtenstall raises the bar

'Where's your homework?'

'I must have left it in the pub.'

That idea was muted some time ago, If I remember rightly it was the Printers Arms which was being considered, but nothing ever came of it

It sounds at first like a good idea but I can see problems arising, not least the increase in sales of half bottles of Vodka from Booze Busters just down the road.

Good: we are not allowed to smoke in pubs... so why the hell should we be allowed to drink in them.... in fact why not close them all down: ( oh they nearly all are )

Re: Non Alcoholic pub in Ossy

My Dad, together with his friend Tony Perkins the butcher, ran a non-alcholic 'nightclub' for the under 18's in Ossy called Gobbinlanders. It was on the corner of Oak Street, on the block facing where the old Co-op used to be.

It opened in '72. A small number of trouble makers eventually meant that it wasn't viable, and it sadly closed in '75.

Forgot all about that Rindi, it was A big thing at the time, you wouldn't be that old then would you? The thing is if trouble makers closed the place in 75, not much chance of a successful enterprise today is there, there are a lot more divvies these days than there were then

No, I remember it well, even though I was only six when it opened. I think it used to be part of the Co-op as well (the shoe shop?)

It was painted black inside, and they'd got an artist to paint big day-glo images of the pop stars of the day on the wall, including my favourite Marc Bolan. There was a small stage, where local bands could perform.

The night it opened there was a queue to get in right round the block, and they stopped counting when they'd got to 200. Pie 'n' peas were available, and only non-alcholic drinks...pop, though of course some older kids tried to sneak in booze.

The very first night someone decided to pull off all the sinks in the men's and ladies loos, which wasn't a good omen.

My Dad and Tony carried on for a couple of years, as they'd both been involved with running the youth club at York St., and knew there was a need for something for young people to do, but in the end it became too much of a headache.

Well it won't get my vote: There are plenty of places for the kids to go to....
Is this what they are planning to do with all our redundant pubs:

Where are all these places?

At least they would be off the street and would have more variety of what to do.

Are there? As many as there are for adults, who have a lot less leisure time to fill?

My niece is 14 and she's a good kid but she's always bored. Her friends try to get her to hang out on street corners but she doesn't like doing that. If they go to Macdonalds or a cafe they get treated like nuisances, and if they run out of cash, they get short shrift.

I think it's a wonderful idea. It's better than the sweaty youth clubs that was around when I was young... All kids really want is somewhere to wear their new gear and to do a bit of socialising..

Re: Non Alcoholic pub in Ossy

what a great idea to get kids familiar with socialising in pubs just in time for when they are all closed down when they reach 18 lol

if you want somewhere for kids to go and have fun build youth centers not invite them into pubs

the govenment moans about kids getting obese then some idiot decides inviting kids to sit on tehir arses in a pub drinking pop and eating crisps is the way to deal with the problem

how about improving existing amenities or making new ones rather than buying an old pub and sticking kids in it and crossing your fingers that they dont smash the place up

mind you the pub wont have many people using it anyway as teh majority of teenagers will be in accy drinking in propper pubs
