Not Selling the Family Silver
There was a brief article in last week's Observer that appears to have gone unnoticed. For the sake of those of you who do not have a regular subscription to this mine of entirely useless information, I'll post it...
Market could remain council-controlled (Accrington Observer 11/02/05, page 3.)
Accrington Market Hall could remain solely in the ownership of Hyndburn Council. That was the message from council leader Peter Britcliffe who is leading a bid to attract outside investment for the hall. Seventeen companies have applied to run the Market Hall but councillor Britcliffe said no deal would be done unless it was ideal. He said: "The decision was taken very early on not to look at a sell-off. We are seeking a partner to invest in the Market Hall and bring it up to the standard we can't. There are some very good ideas coming forward and we will be very selective about them. If we feel we feel we haven't got the right application, things will carry on as they are."

A person afflicted with cynicism and skilled at reading between the lines, might conclude that the scheme to flog the Market Hall off to the highest bidder has hit the buffers and and come off the rails. I wonder how the sale of our remaining assets is progressing?
