Only with experience Bernadette, unfortunately, that is something this particular young man will no longer have the chance to gain.
But, lets not pre-judge too much the police haven't finished their investigations yet, it could have been caused by some mechanical fault or a blown tyre, it might turn out to not have been driver error.
Meanwhile I hope the two passengers have a quick and full recovery.

Re: Not that far from Accrington
This was a Saxo so not a 'fast' car. I have more concerns with how fragile these little cars are. I see far too many accidents on teh motorways where the driver of the big merc/volvo/etc is sat phoning their family where the poor sod in the 'small car' is still being cut out by firemen. There was an interesting article where they interviewed one of Volvo's car designers. Asked why Volvos only get 3/4 starts in NCAP ratings wheras Renault get 5 he responded " I design cars to handle real life crashes not a tiny set of controlled ones" Says it all really.
When shes old enough I will actively encourage Siobhan to drive big meaty cars as I believe she is far safer in one than these tinfoil shopping carts.
Young lads will always drive fast. Its exciting. Coupled with driving games on PS3/Xbox being so realistic they get teh idea they can drive fast and get away with it. I'm not blaming teh games here. I love playing them. The difference is I know the difference between real life and gaming. It would help to get them involved in low level motorsports like Autocross, Autotesting, hillclimbs and the like where they would learn just how cars behave. Unfortunately there aren't the facilities for clubs to get them interested.

Re: Not that far from Accrington
I must admit that I worry about Mimi learning to drive. It seems to be accidents happen when young people are together in vehicles, giving their friends a lift etc.

Re: Not that far from Accrington
Flashy, if its cars etc that your worried about then get in touch with a local motorsport club. even at 14/15 they will get him involved and he will come to respect cars and just how much of a mess they can become if you get things wrong. Its real life crashes rather than playstation ones. Marshalling at rallys etc is a really good way of getting him interested and some types of motorsport can be done before he is old enough to get a road license Autotesting is good fun and dirt cheap. My last autotest car cost £40. They don't even need to be road legal, from a tax/insurance/MOT POV as its all done offroad, you just need a way of getting them there. a favourite is to have a detachable tow hitch on the front of the car, remove the HT leads and it officially becomes a trailer you can tow behind any other road legal car. Education is the key, show him the 'right' way to do it and he is less likey to take silly risks as a form of excitemnet. I also believe that if you show him early on that you trust him enough to let him do stuff like this he will respect you more in the long term.
If its just about not becoming a grannie then I'm afraid its up to you

Re: Not that far from Accrington
lol its just life in general Ian, with whats going on in the world today, who knows how he will turn out (i've already had one comment this week about Reece being a spoilt brat)
the motorsport thing sounds excellent for Reece, he's loves cars, and ANYTHING to do with them, but unfortunately he's only 11

Re: Not that far from Accrington
Thats a good time to get him started with marshalling etc. I'll ask a guy I know who I believe still does a bit who he can contact. I used to do a fair bit of photography of rallys which is another way of keeping him interested whilst showing him how dangerous it can be when it goes wrong.

Re: Not that far from Accrington
A bit off topic, but my boyfriends car was parked up last week and a wagon crashed into it and because my boyfriend drives the GTI model of a VW Golf, he had to explain to his insurance why he picked that particular car to buy so that he could have a courtesy car.
I think its completely wrong that because he's a young male driving a particular car that it could jeopardise him having a hire car, paricularly when he wasn't in the car when it got damaged.
People shouldn't assume all the time that young lads drive like idiots and get themselves into these messes. The majority of drivers drive a bit over the speed limit, its pretty much the norm, but when these lads crash doing it its seen as 'typical'.
My boyfriend nearly crashed the other day because an idiot on a mobile phone was driving like a maniac on the motorway, yet my boyfriend was going at the limit yet I bet they'd point the finger at him before they criticised the guy on the phone!

Re: Not that far from Accrington
young lads tend to 'show off' when they have mates in the car, id like to know how they can afford insurance etc.... because at 18 it aint cheap!

Re: Not that far from Accrington
This is what happend,s when they pass there test at that age, I think they should put the age to 21and pluss before they can take there test, but i think then it won,t solve this,it still depend,s who is behind the weel.

Thing is Blazey, nowt to do with the other driver at times, when you're young and an inexperienced driver, most accidents are due to lack of anticipation; you would recognise a situation coming up and able to avoid it, as should your boyfriend, even though he would not have been at fault, and have had the knowledge and understanding to avoid any incident.
