Re: Oh Dear, Oh Dear, Oh Dear

After an hours hard searching I finally found the figure for Islington's Debt. At 31st March 2003 it stood at £718,900,000. Nice!

On a totally different tack, while I was searching I think I may also have discovered the source of some of the excesses of political correctness.

But correct spelling does matter, for the simple reason that it ensures that your reader does not misunderstand your meaning, if for no other. There are plenty of people out there who will happily misunderstand what you write, given the opportunity. This is how flame-wars and libel cases start. It is better not to give them the opportunity in the first place, don't you think?

On the question of spelling, sometimes a person replies to a post in a hurry, may be the fingers on the keyboard are a little bit quicker than the old grey matter, result a few spelling mistakes, also not always possible to use spell checker.

No, I think it's totally off topic from the thread wander

Unless of course we consider councils to appear less impressive when they are unable to spell correctly. Speed in a message board post is one thing (I'm always getting my fingers in a twist) but when something is produced for publication and contains glaring errors which can lead to misinterpretation one wonders why on earth they didn't employ a proof reader.

Still off topic.....but can you provide evidence of this, or is this just a general observation

Re: Oh Dear, Oh Dear, Oh Dear

Mis-spelling in an official publication puts me off and I know it has the same effect on friends and aquaintances. The impression it gives is that they can't be bothered or don't care......so that leaves me wondering if they have the same attitude towards everything.

Of course when it leads to misinterpretation that's when real problems can arise. If what they say isn't actually what they mean it can lead to false expectations.

I once had some simple examples of how punctuation errors can alter the whole meaning of a sentence or paragraph. A bit like the grammatical structure effect in adverts like:

"Mahogany dining room table for sale by elderly lady with nicely carved wooden legs."

Good example, I have one of those. It's for sale, and it's cheap.

Re: Oh Dear, Oh Dear, Oh Dear

To return to the discussion, what happened to George Slynn? I have a dim recollection that he was at one point facing an investigation and a possible surcharge. Did anything happen or did the odious creature weasel his way out of it?

Re: Oh Dear, Oh Dear, Oh Dear

Aaaargh! I can't believe this. I have just done a quick Google on George Slynn and I have discovered that he is a County Councilor now, for Great Harwood. How can anyone in their right mind vote for someone like that?

Re: Oh Dear, Oh Dear, Oh Dear

Looks like he's moved on to bigger, and better things. Oh to be drawn by the corridors of power, sit on all those committees, and shape the lives of all those local people.
