Oh yes it is.....oh no it isn't....
I went to the Civic Theatre this afternoon to watch the panto. Don't worry I did take the kids with me. It was Snow White and I have to say that it was probably the best panto that I've ever seen.
It was funny, fast paced and well acted (not something usually associated with panto). I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I'm torn with panto between loving it and hating it with a passion. It's low brow, unsophisticated and crass but it's equally funny, entertaining and great for the kids.
It's only on for another day so if you're free Sunday 18th I would definitely recommend you take your kids.

i love panto - i think the spirit of theatre is kept alive in britain because of it, bloody daft but a brilliant example of british eccentricity!

Gayle .. how can you say good acting 'not usually associated with panto' !! All of the characters have to be multi-talented.. sing, deliver comedy lines, project in a way like no other theatre presentations, move your body to the music, keep your cool constantly to all the ad-libs that other members of the cast throw at you and above all be believable to all those kids that come to watch.
At the final walkdown, children are not critical of your performance, the hero gets the cheers and the villain the boos. If this happens, then you have played the character well.
It's difficult 'cause you have to be at one with the audience 100% and this calls for very specialised talent.

I agree with Katex that you need to be multi talented to be in Panto. There are lots of good, serious actors who appear in Panto, Ian McKellan being a prime example and he speaks very highly of it. I loved it as a kid but haven't been to one for years.....ah well, maybe next year.

Apart from the kids school panto's I have never been to one yet Glasgow has a few on. Maybe I should just jump in and see if I enjoy.

How dare you? You complete and utter snob. The best live theatre I've seen for many a year was Paul and Barry Chuckle in 'Dick Whittington' at Manchester Opera House last Christmas. Low-brow indeed.

Re: Oh yes it is.....oh no it isn't....
Paul: 'What time is it?'
Barry: 'Hold on I'll get my trumpet.'
Paul: 'How can you tell the time with a trumpet?'
Barry: 'Watch this.'
Barry gives a long loud blast on his trumpet.
Voice from the distance: 'Who's playing a trumpet at two o'clock in the morning?'
Barry: 'There you are, it's two o'clock.'
To me, to you, to me, to you.
Brilliant stuff. Low-brow, never.
