Re: Old lady attacked
Just been down to my friends..........forensics are at the old ladys flat and got a copper outside, they were bringing out some stuff as I came past, and I had been at my friends for over an hour. The old lady has been taken to Preston for forensic examination , but looking like it could be quite serious.

Re: Old lady attacked
Poor lass..Work hard all your life and just want to spend a few years in peace and some git does this, which will probably scar her for life..
Even if they caught him some smarmy lawyer would probably get all charges dropped. I say lock him in a room with the victims family for 10 minutes, and if he can walk out he can go free...

It pains me to read of such incidents, which were virtually unknown 50 years ago. Hopefully the old lady will not be too traumatised.
Like most men of a mature age (that’s just a nice way of putting old git) I wake up during the night, usually somewhere between about 0300 and 0500 with a full bladder. Many times as I wake up I can hear someone trying the front door.
Did I dream it or was it the sound of someone trying my door what woke me up or was it the full bladder? It’s difficult to decide. Some early mornings I hear someone knocking on my door. Dreaming? Possibly, yet it seems so real.
Being aware that in getting older and living by myself I would be probably more vulnerable than an older couple I have got myself into the habit of locking my front door as dusk approaches and certainly before it gets dark. I have also deliberately acquired myself another habit of checking the front door as the penultimate act before going to bed. The key here is that they are HABITS now and habits are difficult to break or forget
The door to my washroom/shower/toilet is just an arms length away from the front door so as I reach for the washroom/shower/toilet door handle with my left arm, the right hand tries the front door to confirm that it is locked. There have been occasions when I found that I had not locked the door and this habit flushes them out. Hmmm! A bit of a pun there.
Being an ingrained habit now, if I forget to go through the checking routine, which happens sometime, and get into bed, I can’t settle and the subconscious nags away at me until I have to get up and check. This entrenched habit and a nagging conscience hopefully shields me from forgetting to lock my front door and checking if I have and going to sleep.
The real oddity is that when I have an afternoon nap I just do it with scant regard as to whether the door is locked or not.

Poor old lass, she must have been terrified. Hope the police are hot on the heels of this scumbag and give him a right kicking when they catch up with him. Unfortunately the Courts can’t be relied on to deliver fitting punishment

Get into a routine of locking it before your nap.

I suppose that I should do but when I’m sat all comfy like in my recliner I just drift off to sleep.
To get up and go and lock the door breaks the spell and I’m wide awake.

Re: Old lady attacked
I have been awoken in the night by burglars in the house (not in Accy I should tell you), and that was traumatic (mainly cos I didnt catch them before they ran), enough, to be a lone female, and be sexually assaulted or worse, must be absolutely horrendous, there are some pleasant paople on here (cut his bits off!) I say, hang him from a public gallery by his bits, and them cut him away from his bits! slowly, Then again, am I being too nice? Hope the old lass is ok!

Re: Old lady attacked
I have a door chain on permenantly - day and night.
Fortunately this block of 4 flats has lockable doors to the stairwell which a neighbour locks as soon a dusk falls, and unlocks at dawn.
So there are 2, 5 lever mortice locks between me and the outside world.
When you live alone, vulnerability can be worrying - not where I live.

Re: Old lady attacked
I hope the lady is ok - I can't imagine how awful that would be at any age.
there have been times, when Chris has been called back into work in the evening, when I've gone to bed alone and I find it almost impossible to sleep. I check all the doors about five times before going upstairs.
Ironically the one time that the door was left unlocked was when we were both in and both of us thought the other one had locked up - we check now.

Being woken to see a person stood at my bedroom door was an experience to end all experiences, but that was when I lived on the Higher Croft Estate and I was much younger. On reflection I think that the burglar got a bigger shock then I did. He scarpered as fast as his legs could carry him when he saw that I was awake and starting to get up.
Where I am and have been for a number of years is as tranquil as you would want except when the kids go and come from school. Except for those dreams or was it reality. I don’t intend to lose any sleepover it.
Fortunately men are less likely to be sexually assaulted than women. I have yet to hear of a woman forcing her wicked ways onto an old man.
Chance would be a fine thing.

Ah yes the chain. Now there’s a conundrum.
All my kids have a key to my flat for obvious reasons. But if I put the chain on when locking the door they couldn’t get in when it might be critical that one of them does so.
So I don’t use the chain except when answering the door after dark. Whilst fumbling with the key to unlock the door, one hand is quietly placing the chain on. But then a chain is no defence against a determined person. One end is secured in the door frame, the weak point of the whole assembly. And there is enough room for a partially opened door to insert some bolt cutters.
My door is one of those modern ones where turning the key pushed bolts out near the top, bottom and middle and short of a steel door several inches thick it is about as secure as you can get these days. Even so a door is only as good as the door frame and the door frame is and always has been the weak point.

Saw Palmetto Works wonderfully on men of any age whose sleep is disturbed by the need to empty their bladder. Herbal remedy that is readily available from Holland and Barrett and the like. Perfectly safe. Husband has been taking them fore night as he t year, if he stops taking them he goes, I have more than enough of waking me up during the night as he falls over the furniture

Re: Old lady attacked
Poor lady my god it makes you wonder what sort of world we are living in Was a lad in one of the old folks flats near my Mums the other week, apparently he was off his head. Luckily the carers were in the bedroom and saw him off but since then Mum has been told to keep the door locked at all times. Hope this poor lady will be ok
