Re: Old Time Crooners ....
Frank Sinatra has to have the last word,"Loves Been Good To Me" "My Way", yes jambutty Al Jolson 'invented' crooning, Al Bowley "pennies From Heaven" is a close runner.

Re: Old Time Crooners ....
Not a fan of the crooners but have a favorite anti-crooner. Remember Bill Murray in Saturday Night Live doing his crooner imitation: Priceless!

I think Michael Buble is pretty close to the modern day crooner... he does a lovely job on some of the old songs.

Re: Old Time Crooners ....
The mention of Al Jolson got me a bit nostalgic. I loved the films of his life which starred Larry Parks. L.P. was one of my childhood heroes and I know it's silly but I got quite upset when he died and the news reporter announced it almost as a throwaway item like "if anybody knows who that is." I even wrote a poem about it - how sad is that?

Sinatra and the rest of the crooners you can keep. They didn't sing, just talked. Snappy dressers though.

I think you tend to look a bit rough Rindi when your clocking 70, I look rough and I'm only 60, but then again I did burn the candle at both ends for many years

Re: Old Time Crooners ....
Ah! Yes! The Dance Bands of yesteryear West Ender and garinda. Ambrose, Geraldo, Harry Roy, Lew Stone, Roy Fox and not forgetting Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, the Dorsey Brothers to name just a handful. Who can forget Gene Krupa’s rhythmic drumming with the American Big Bands. In my view he was the best drummer of all time barring none. Of course cocaine helped. But nonetheless the 1939 Carngeie Hall version of Sing, Sing, Sing lasted just over 12 minutes and Krupa’s rhythm was legendary.
I bought The Jolson Story DVD some time back WillowTheWhisp and it also included Jolson Sings Again.
Larry Parks, who played the part of Jolson was so perfect in his miming to Jolson’s singing that it was impossible to tell that he was miming. His actions were move perfect too.
I think that Jim Reeves does count steeljack. Did you know that someone called Sally Kelly recorded a song entitled “He’ll Have To Stay” as an ‘answer’ to JR’s “He’ll Have To Go”.

Re: Old Time Crooners ....
Not really crooners in my book, but adore Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee.
Doris Day could hold a tune as well.

Re: Old Time Crooners ....
It was me grannyclaret – I mentioned Mamma Cass. She had a natural singing voice of such tone purity that is rarely matched these days.
Judith Durham of the Seekers was another.
