Olympic Torch

Anybody watching the news about the Olympic torch being carried through London.

Organised chaos, makes you wonder how secure the Olympics will be when we host them

What was the decision about Gordon Brown holding it ? Heard the controversy, but not what the outcome was going to be.

Re: Olympic Torch

i dont think englands human rights record will come under as much scrutiny as chinas!!

i think the london ones will be good esp if the iraq/afganistan issue has been dealt with.

a bit scary when they tried to snatch the flame off

but this is so much negative publicity for china - the fact that china's sent its own security for the flame and the police have provided 2 extra circles of protection - for a flame

Re: Olympic Torch

Why was ex-Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq carrying the torch?

What a load of publicity hype
This expensive publicity stunt of 'carrying the flame' serves no purpose that I can see.
Now if we had Ken Clarke as PM he would have ensured it was useful by lighting his cigar from it

Apparently the Olympic flame has it's own plane, to fly it around on it's world tour. Not that that will make much difference to China's already massive carbon footprint.

I wonder if it is carried in the hold, or taken on as hand luggage?

The security today appeared to be a shambles. I sincerely hope that by 2012 we aren't still at war, and we don't have protestors on the streets of London, running similarly amok.

I'm only worried in case Blue Peter had run a competition that was meant to have been won by a child, after all the recent scandals associated with the programme.

BBC NEWS | World | Europe | Long history of Olympics protests

Protests are nothing new to the olympic games though are they.

According to the link - Ireland was the first country to protest at the games held in London because the government at that time wouldnt give independence to them!!!

Nice to see the Australian PM standing outside no 10 saying that no Chinese security personnel would be used when the torch arrived in his country. What a contrast to our own spineless PM who allowed the goon squad of a repressive police state to throw their weight around on the streets of London.

Re: Olympic Torch

They make enough cheap fag lighters in China not to need the transportation of a flame all the way round the world

maybe because her ex Richard Bacon who was also a presenter on blue peter before he got sacked was a druggie and it helped in some kind of 'speed' race, therefore it may be a running thing?

who knows
