No it wasn't started as anything other than a thread praising a section of society that usually gets rubbished as having less work than a sick note, I could fill a server with how I might think they (youth) are being exploited it's one of my pet hates.
well done however for your sudden bit of back peddling, maybe I've also given you a dig in the past that has left a festering wound?
If so I won't apologise, just ask you to reply in the thread concerned NOT bring it onto the rest of the site.

No Less, the only festering wound is in my backside and that's nothing to do with you.
I hope I'm woman enough to take part in this forum without being cowed by anyone - take it on the chin and come back fighting!
I back pedalled as you put it because I don't really know what's going on here, it was just a thought that came into my head when I read your post.

Re: On A Happier Note
A happier note ... mmm When I read the thread opener, I expected to see a few positive comments about how reassuring it is to see that some young people are getting out and doing a menial job in tough times (well, tough in most of Europe) rather than sitting on their asses waiting for society or something like that to support them. But this? I don't know ... I think it's a positive to find that some kids still have that old-fashioned Lancashire work ethic ... you know, "when the going gets tough; the tough get going" sort of thing. Ah well, back to cleaning guns. Anyone wanna buy a Winchester 94, chambered for 44 magnum? Excellent condition. Great for moose.

That was obvious with your first post in this thread, but you do tend to attempt to know, even when you don't, perhaps that's the Scientific learning?
Although I believe the real scientists claim that the most profound statement they can make is:-
'I don't know', (inevitably they go on to give their opinion anyway).

Thank you both very much, when I posted the thread, these were the kinds of responses I expected, I can't understand how such an innocent thread could cause such aggro.

Re: On A Happier Note
Good on 'em I say! I know a young person who does the same thing in Manchester and he puts up with the mindnumbing boredom, sudden downpours, abuse from passing winos and derelicts (God help anyone in downtown Accy ) just so he can pay his way in the world.
Have total and utter cynicism for those in authority including politicians, both national and local, but always like to think the best of ordinary folk.

I'll bet there's more than one of us on here has done "menial" work in order to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table (no Monty Python clips please ) ... I earned most of my education waiting tables, tending bar, and driving a hack. Come to think of it, might just drive tomorrow so that my day driver can take his kids to the Santa Claus parade. Now, any offers on the Winchester ... it'll stop a decent sized bear, trust me

Not to worry Mags, I don't remember this being a fun thread, if it was it would be on your ignore list.

My cynical mind wondered if they might possibly, just possibly be being exploited - or possibly not. If the latter is the case, then good on them for having a job and I am in full agreement with Less - but surely someone has to point out the possible flaws in any scenario?

I know where you live, was just checking you hadn't seen them on one of your forays.
I guessed you hadn't actually seen them, and that you had made a leap of faith which for a scientist is an anathema
Of course they are being exploited, but the last thing they need is to be accused of ripping off the taxpayer.
The only flaws in the scenario come from misinformation i.e someone adding an unnecessary compound to the petri dish
