Re: Out Of Date Food
I found my old uncle using a rather old looking spice jar the other day, when i looked at the bottle of mixed spice the sell by date was 1977. Maybe I could put it on the antiques roadshow.

Re: Out Of Date Food
I don't have too much issue with sell by dates... What do we really think that things go off on that actually date, is their some kind of time release inside the packet that sends it off when it gets to the date in question???? Meat/Fish is prob the only thing that I will take notice of when it gets to the date

Re: Out Of Date Food
If dates to sell by/best before were an absolute then why can shops sell them cheaper. When these dates are close the supermarkets have a reduced sale. I therefore reckon on at least 2-3 bdays beyond before I chance illness. The meat and fish issue is easier as you see them turning and less likely to eat it. How do you think we ended up with curry ie spicey food to hide the taste of rancid meat that was given to the poor on the Indian sub continent in colonial times (alledgedly).

Re: Out Of Date Food
The insistance on "Sell By" or "Use By" dates is another one of the make-work scams from those caring, sharing, creeps in Brussels.
If you think about it logically, none of it makes any sense whatsoever. Take cheese for example. The whole point about cheese is that it is encouraged to go off in the process of manufcture by the addition of Rennet; that's part of the taste - the longer you leave it, the better it tastes. Some of the more obscure varieties have layers of mould on them so thick you could sole shoes with it.
Obviously, perishable stuff like fish and meat need to be sold fresh, for the rest of the contents of your shopping bag it doesn't make one iota of difference.
It is little wonder that so many people have all sorts of exotic food allergies these days, their food is so sanitised that they get very little chance to acquire any resistance to germs.

Re: Out Of Date Food
Well they have interfered with most things so on the point of cheese would they try and ban blue cheeses?

Re: Out Of Date Food
Past the sell by date food is good for dieting, as it doesn't stay in you as long.
