Re: Out Of Date Food

Does anyone consider asking the importers and manufacturers of their food how long their ingredients have been sitting in warehouses etc before it is made into the things you buy in the shop and then stored again in distribution centres before it is sold to you with instructions on when you should use it by? No, I thought not.

Fireman...I have a spice jar like that, but it is only the jar that is old.......I refill the jar as I run out......mine (after looking) is 1979.

I agree with A-B, we have become a society that is rich enough to dispose of everything......that is why we are running out of landfill sites.

Re: Out Of Date Food

Acrylic-bob has a point does anybody be sure that the food that they eat out of a packet is as fresh as it can be when packaged. There is no way that every food factory can be covered 24/7 year in year out. One must miss the net so to speak. Then add the food recalls because of contamination or illeagal additives "found" in our food usually by accident.

I'm really quite fussy when it comes to ood foods, its silly I know, but I'll chuck things as soon as they reach the date, I'm more careful now when buying food because I was throwing soo much away and I hate wasting food.

If food goes past it's sell by date in our house.
I wont touch it but will ask Mick if he wants it.
Before it goes off.
He's not fussy like me.

Food is always better fresh, having said that there is no reason why it can't be used as long as it hasn't gone off. I am happy to use certain things past sell by dates but for key items I only buy them when I want them to make sure they are as fresh as possible.

Re: Out Of Date Food

When my brother's family were going away on holiday in July, they gave me some fruit and veg they thought would go off.

A month later some of the tomatoes were still as firm, and apparently as fresh, as the day they gave them to me.

These were refridgerated, and had been bought 'fresh' from Accy market.

Preservatives?

I think there may have been.

Still tasted ok though.

Re: Out Of Date Food

I have spices in my cupboard that are 2 years out of date. Turmeric, chilly powder and coriander.
I still use em, and nothing has happened to me. In fact they have got stronger if anything.

Re: Out Of Date Food

I'm not the least bit fussy about expiry dates on products. Manufacturers put them on in order to cover themselves, especially pharmaceuticals. I once took some Brufen when I had the flu and was aching all over. Not only did the Brufen expire 2 years previously but it had also been prescribed by the vet for my dog......... Yes it was dispensed at the vets too... When I looked at the tablets they looked exactly the same as human Brufen and were the same dosage so I took em. They helped the aches and pains no end...

Most of the contents of my fridge and kitchen cupboards are expired, either by days, weeks and sometimes months. I only chuck stuff away when it starts to grow new stuff. I should probably have a health warning on my kitchen door as my kitchen is where food comes to die......

Having said all that, it is as rare as rocking horse manure that I ever get any kind of stomach upset...

Re: Out Of Date Food

Lets face it - it is only on packaged and processed foodstuffs that you find a sell-by/use-by date. Buy fresh fruit, veg and fish from the market and meat from your local butcher and you won't have this problem. Buy rubbish from ASDA and you will. Of course, far more lethal to human health is fast food. Given a choice of eating the contents of a 10-year old can of corned beef or a Maccy's quarter pounder, I know which I'd choose.

I think a lot of goods now use the phrase 'best before' rather than 'use by' which says it all really.
