I agree that the European attitude to older kids being allowed alcohol with family meals encourages a more mature attitude and respect for alcohol at an early age.
However, the Europeans also have a greater respect for food and family meals are given a higher priority than in the UK.
A small glass of wine with a lovely Sunday roast and all the trimmings may be ok, but not appropriate with a "chippy tea".
Some families only sit around a table together at Christmas, you can see why a can of lager on a street corner with their mates has a greater appeal to some teenagers.
