i think his last live performance was about 5 years ago granny.

Re: Italians applauding at funerals. Tha Italians are much more exhuberant than the Brits in general and show their appreciation of life very easily even in what we consider to be solemn moments - i don't find it out of place anymore.
I do get worried about the way they applaud the pilot when an Alitalia plane lands though - perhaps they don't always make it....!
Pavarotti was a great ambassador for their country and the Italians truly loved his "big" persona - as well as his unique talent he had a very common touch -loved a game of cards with his friends and his food and wine - in this he was a typical Italian and his countrymen were very proud of him.
