Payments for Organ Donations

Would it be ethical to make payments for Organ and Tissue donation, say cash incentives or payment of funeral cost. The Nuffield Council on Bioethics is asking if it is ethical to use finances to increase donations of organs eggs and sperm. At the moment payment for most types of organ and tissue donation is illegal. his consultation will last 12 week with the councils findings published in the Autumn of 2011

From my point of view cash incentives shouldn't be necessary, I've had a donor card for years, when I leave this earth take your pick, but I certain know who I would like to receive my lungs. I have always said we should have an opt out as opposed to an opt in system, which would greatly increase the number of organs for transplant

The `opt out` instead of `opting in` is a great idea Jay, i`ve also had a card for years.....my body is no use to me when i`m gone.........i`d make great compost though..........

Re: Payments for Organ Donations

i carried a donor card for years and then registered on their website because i kept losing the donor cards ..

Think it should really be an opt out scheme .. if you dont want to donate then opt out ..

Money for organs ... dont agree with that.

Any of my stuff will be available from my death until whenever necessary, after all, pickling is one of the greatest preserves known to mankind.

(I do carry a donor card, if it's of use after I've finished with it good luck to the recipient, I'm sure they will look after it better than I have).

Re: Payments for Organ Donations

I'm dubious about this. I suspect that there would be a number of people who would readily donate a kidney for a cash injection (so to speak) but end up with health problems that cost the NHS even more to put right.

Stick with the 'opt out' option as a preferred method of harvesting body parts. They're welcome to mine and my family knows this.

I'd welcome some sort of mandatory donor scheme that people can decide not to be part of if it helped the living who are in serious need.
