Re: Peregrine Falcon Web Cam!

Afterthought -on the Ribble near Hurst Green there are Oyster Catchers nesting -nice to see, and the usual Herons, Canada Geese and ducks...

Once saw a Kingfisher on the Calder as a girl when out walking on a sunday with my dad -fantastic sight. Saw one on our canal here a cuple of years ago -haven't seen it since though, pity...

This area is full of herons (it's the Provincial symbol), wild ducks and Moorhens -not birds of prey but still nice to see. Personally i'm a Swallow watcher -love 'em and we have quite a few nesting. They were back late this year - I went on holiday on March 26th and they hadn't come back.

Went to mum's in Tenerife and there they have Kestrels hunting in the Baranco and fantastic huge white owls that make a really weird cry at night and come swooping low over the roof terrace -they are the symbol of the island, amazing to see. Sometimes at mum's we see some of the Eagles from the Jungle Park too which is on a nearby mountain. Been to the display there which is really worth seeing, had a Golden Eagle fly to my hand -pretty scary!
I don't know what kestrel is bigger than UK kestrel?

I found this peregrine cam in Rome the young are bigger than the London one. It also seems to run longer than the London one on my computer - the London one doesn't run longer than a minute before I have to refresh.

They had an American Bald Eagle in the country fare and charged for a photo holding it.

Oystercatchers used to breed down the Calder near Altham, don't know if they still do? Also was a Sand Martin colony. The Calder has been cleaned up now a lot more than it was in 80's so probably more Kingfishers there.

Kes,the Sand Martin colony at Altham on the Calder is still there.
Access to the riverbank is on the Padiham side of the Walton Arms.
Kingfishers, are more common in the area now. This is definitely down
to improved water quality.Last local sighting,River Hyndburn at Church this week.

That must be a different Sand Martin colony, this one was towards Whalley, just past a sewage farm on the river bank same side as Altham Church but the path was on the other side of the river. Also used to see Common Sandpipers along the Calder. Kingfishers are doing better as more waters are cleaner in last 20 years.

Some swallows reach the south in March.

These Italian Peregrines; some have left the nest tray and gone along the ledge - very precarious in spots like this they can fall off and die!

The Charing X hosp falcons seem to have a cushy number with a good roof over their nest and they're doing well even though one of the three chicks was lagging behind but is now catching up.

The Chichester cathedral nest appears to have a smallish roof but the Nottingham Trent University one has no roof at all and there is only one chick left now after the bad weather of a couple of weeks ago when the brooding parent got absolutely drenched while sitting. Very sad but the remaining chick is doing well.

This falcon watching is quite addictive!

Wouldn't say addictive Sue -i suffer from vertigo so find it hard to look at though interesting. Just seen the Italian peregrines in Rome-from 4 they seem to have gone to three though quite mature now.

Here the swallows are busy with their young and will soon be onto their second brood!

Di you wouldn't know the Charing X hosp ones were high up on the roof as the webcam is inside the box.

He he we used to have swallows nesting in the roof of the feed store of our stable when we had the goats. I loved the way the baby birds would stand on the edge of the nest with their bums over the edge and poop. You could always tell where the nests were by the pile of poo on the floor below!

They should show a distance photo of the building and where the nest box is, to give us perspective. I've never been to the Nottingham one before - if it's not well protected why don't they move it, or put a roof on the box or something? Do you know how many chicks got lost this year through the weather?

The Itallian one is my fav at the moment as you get a good view. There is one chick that goes along the ledge, that I think runs round the building. Yesterday you could see all 4 - 2 right down the ledge and they came running back down when an adult came with food, then one dissapeared again. There are 3 in the nest as I write this.
