Police Pay Scales

I have been reading the news lately about the Police pay issues so I thought I would take a look at how much they actually earn: -

2006/7 Pay Scales

PC - £23,454 to £32,985 (depending on years of service)
Sergeant - £32,985 to £37,071 (depending on years of service)
Inspector - £42,264 to £45,843 (depending on years of service)

Is it worth the argument over a few hundred pounds or is the government right?

Does the government think that they get paid enough anyway, do you?

Re: Police Pay Scales

as the police have NO right to strike, i think the government has shown great arrogance, by not implementing the 2.5% that the INDEPENDANT body said they should be awarded.

Re: Police Pay Scales

Any government that loses the support of the police has taken the first step towards their own downfall.
If there are anti government demos for any reason, the police will take a 'softly softly' approach, which will be the green light for more demos, and stir up anti government feelings.
To illustrate the contrast - Maggie Thatcher treated the police right and they pulled out all the stops for her during the miners strike and the poll tax riots.

This pay mess is yet another crass error by the Brown crew - their days are numbered ----sad -- because I am a socialist

Re: Police Pay Scales

i think they get paid 3K more which is the london living allowance...

thing is they're not exactly out on the dogs so to speak - its a good wage. tahts why they get so much application when they recruit.

but if it comes to public opinion and they actually realised how much they get i dont think many people wud support them as much as say if the nurses went on strike or the firemen.

i think both those are much more respected than the police but i guess they want a piece of the speeding camera's wages too

Re: Police Pay Scales

I do not think that the police should be allowed to strike, any more than the army should be allowed to strike. How much more are we to be expected to pay for these institutionalised half-wits to sit around in squad cars with speed cameras all day?

I wonder whether the family of Reece Jones or Jesse James would agree that the police are unerpaid?

When this row first surfaced the other day, a woman emailed BBC Breakfast to welcome the police to the real world, where employees do not always get the sort of pay they either deserve or which has been agreed.

Re: Police Pay Scales

While on this topic then does anyone have the pay scales for nurses and fire fighters, it would be nice to compare them all?

I can get a current nurses one from work, it will include the payrise but won't take into account pensions and other benefits. A newly qualified nurse (with a degree after 3 years training) will not earn what a police officer will after their training, which is significantly less.

Re: Police Pay Scales

way i see it, its not about which sector of the workforce is on whatever, its about a principle, something which many these days, would not recognise if it slapped em in the kisser. i have no particular love for the police, but i believe independant reviews should be sacrosanct.

Should have looked at recent payslip now just over £20k but I have been on Ambulance Service for 20 years. Top of Band 4 under NHS Agenda for Change paypoints (didn't get back in time to edit other post)

If it's about going back on a previously agreed agreement then I can see that they have a point - but still don't feel that they should strike over it.
