Political Correctness
Trying to think of a new thread which does not mention THAT virus and/or vaccine, and for a bit of a laugh, I thought I’d do some research about political correctness, which as we all know has sometimes gone crazy. I think there may have been a previous thread about this, and we all know that it is no longer correct to use ‘man’ at the end of a word – but that this should be ‘person’. However, I have found some other so-called PC words and thought I would share just a few of them with you. Hopefully other members will add some examples which will cause a smile or a shake of a head in disbelief. So go for it and let’s hear them.
Here are some of the ones I have found:
Easter eggs should be referred to as ‘Spring Spheres’’ – to avoid insulting children who do not celebrate Easter.
Juvenile delinquents should be referred to as ‘children at risk’.
Mothers-to-be are now ‘pregnant people’ to avoid offence and celebrate diversity.
‘He’ and ‘she’ should be ‘they’ and ‘them’ which are gender neutral terms.
Husband/wife should now be ‘partner’.
The reflective road safety measures known as cat’s eyes are now referred to by a County Council as ‘road studs’ because people might get upset by thinking cats had been killed and had their eyes removed.
Illegal immigrants should be referred to as ‘undocumented migrants’.
I think we all know that Enid Blyton used a derogatory term when naming a toy in her stories, and that Robin Hood was called a communist for his socialist ideas of robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. However, did you know that parents complained about the story of Sleeping Beauty because she was kissed without her consent, and about The Ugly Duckling for body shaming.
Tomboy is a no-no, exotic is racist, and instead of Merry Christmas it should be Season’s Greetings.

Re: Political Correctness
And while I’m on it, here are some more examples of descriptive names and phrases that are politically correct:
Homeless- outdoor urban dweller
Dishonest – ethically disorientated
Dustbin man – sanitary engineer
Insult – emotional rape
Poor – economically marginalised
Drunk – chemically inconvenienced (I really like this one)
Unemployed – economically inactive
Liar – economical with the truth
Shoplifting – irregular shopping

Re: Political Correctness
Yes Cashy, you are right.
I think Dorothy’s intention was to get other posters to respond with the PC terms that they find most irritating...rather than the fact that we all know it is a ploy to dumb down people into accepting a homogenised life....sanitised of all that makes it interesting.
Trying to promote an idea that we are all equal...when life makes it very clear that there is no equality...no matter what words you use to try to manipulate ideas.
All of those on your list Dorothy are pet hates....but the one which really grinds my gears is the Americanism ‘Happy holidays’ instead of Merry Christmas.....and another is the term councils use instead of Merry Christmas ‘Winterval’.....what does that mean in reality?
Zero, zilch nada.
Dorothy I hope more people respond to your thread with their own views of the PC terminology which blights our lives.
Thank goodness I am at the fag end of existence!

Re: Political Correctness
Not sure if real or not but .....
Vertically challenged = Midget / Dwarf
Folically challenged = Baldy
Geographically disoriented = lost
Then there was the army favourite of "Egyptian PT", more of a cover expression than a PC thing, usually it meant sloping off to get your head down when you should've been working.

Re: Political Correctness
Oh aye, nearly forgot
Mong = Downs syndrome
That said though in the army it referred to someone useless, pulling a fly one or just plain lazy & in our house, it's practically a term of endearment.
I recall one time we were all out shopping & I was doing the bagging up at the till, proper "Man baggin" too, all the soft & squashy stuff in first then the heavy tins on top, no problem, Bev saw what I was upto & said
Bev "What, you doing you Mong!"
Me "Packing, whats it look like?"
Young Girl on till "You can't say that!"
Us "Yeah we can, it's a family thing!"
Eeh my how we chuckled while she sat there mortified, what a strange world we've become.

Re: Political Correctness
Yes, Margaret, that is what I am hoping for, that Accy Web members will have fun with this thread, but then I do have a weird sense of humour so maybe I'm wrong and perhaps not many will see the funny side of being politically correct.
I certainly agree that those who spend their time making sure that everything is politically correct as they see it, and try to enforce it on others, have lost the plot and need to get a life.

Re: Political Correctness
love all this and my politically incorrect lifestyle. never forget who started all this, a certain tony blair. even good old barbara windsor type boobs are a no go with em being called chests for baby feeding purposes. then some of the youngsters brag about they and their male partner being pregnant. sorry snowflake you are but if your male one is like me who fathered two kids they never have been and never will. the increase of their stomache will be due to over consumption of food and drink.

That made me laugh. I've not heard that expression in Years (it was very popular in School). It seems to have been largely sanitised from everyday vernacular.

think that went away even before the word spastic went away. would not say that was a bad thing to be honest. its a long way off todays sanitation by a long way. whats always made me laugh was when moving to keighley and refereeing in bradford i had problems finding some inner city football grounds. one day i asked an asian guy where some street was. his answer i,ll never forget was to carry on up the road i,m on and turn right at a **** shop on the corner.

Not in our house, as I said it's practically a term of endearment.

Re: Political Correctness
watched that film a few times. its certainly not one for the guardian reading snowflakes unless they wanted to get offended again by something. anyone with a sense of humour living in certain parts of the country would have loved it. thats the problem now, they do not want anyone to have a laugh anymore but have a po faced puritanical lifestyle like them. without laughter we are finished.
