Railways to get 1000 new carriages

According to this news report on the BBC web site the Govt. is going to finance 1000 new carriages for the overcrowded privatized railways , has anyone any knowledge as to where these new carriges will be constructed ? will they be British built in the UK using British labor ?

Don't be silly. We haven't got that scale of engineeering left in this country

Re: Railways to get 1000 new carriages

Tony Blair has further killed of our heavy manufacturing capabilities with his global warming plans.

We will have to shut down our industry to meet his targets. It has been happening for a while anyway. All our process equipment moves to Eastern Europe and China to make the same pollution as it was making here.

The result is no reduction in C02 output worldwide, all our jobs have moved abroad. Well done Tony, we will produce nothing in this Country, we will have no jobs and the planet will still be doomed. It will be ok though because there will be plenty of room on the trains as no one will need to commute to work, they wont have a job.

How many years do you think it will be before we are classed as a third world country?

These carriages used to be made along with some of the engines, at the 'Plant' in Doncaster where was born, most of my relatives lived and worked around it all their life, I think the other big waggon plant was at Swindon, Doncaster is now shut as probably is Swindon, this job will probably go to the French.

Angry Re: Railways to get 1000 new carriages

Correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t the railways private companies?

Shouldn’t they pay for their own carriages instead of dishing out huge bonuses to the fats cats and not forgetting the shareholders dividends, which are subsidised by the taxpayer anyway?

So the government (meaning the long suffering taxpayer) will pay for the cost of building them and then lease them to the train companies at a cost of £130 million pa. Fine but how much will it cost to build 1,000 new carriages? It seems to be a closely guarded secret.

“Much of the extra rolling stock is likely to be used on the jammed network serving London and south-east England, where passenger increases are highest.” Declares the BBC web site. I don’t suppose that it has anything to do with the forthcoming Olympics? Nah! That would be cynical to think that!
